Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Anm. a. The Holy Spirit is a. a person, not merely a power or attribute, not merely another designation for the Father. John 14:16: "another Comforter." 14:26: "the Spirit, whom my Father will send." 15:26: "whom I will send unto you from the Father." Note a. Personal names, personal works, personal revelations (for example at the baptism of Christ), personal experiences (for example, that he dwells in believers, is grieved, etc.) are ascribed to him. Note b. An attribute or power is not sent. Antithesis. 1. The Socinians: the Spirit is not a person but a power. Luke 1:35: "the power of the Highest." Where the Spirit is presented as a person, it is personification. 2. Schleiermacher: just as one speaks of a national spirit (Volksgeist), so also of the Holy Spirit; b. a person distinct from the Father. See "Trinity," page 584–585; c. the third person of the Godhead.

Anm. a.

3. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. John 15:26: "who proceeds from the Father." Gal. 4:6: "the Spirit of his Son." Hymn 184:3: "who proceeds from both." Yet it is to be noted here a. that this proceeding is not a spatial one, nor a proceeding by which only a particular working of God is denoted, but a breathing forth, spiratio, b. that it is not the kind of proceeding of which Christ speaks of himself, John 8:42: "I have come forth" (ekporeuetai and exerchetai), c. that the procession of the Spirit is distinct from the being begotten or the eternal generation of the Son, although we cannot say wherein the distinction consists, d. that the Spirit, although he proceeds from the Father and the Son, is nevertheless not lesser than the others. Note a. The Spirit is called the Spirit of God: 1 Cor. 6:11. Rom. 8:14. 1 Cor. 3:16. 12:3. The Spirit that is from God: 1 Cor. 2:12. your Father's Spirit, Matt. 10:20. the breath of the Almighty: Job 33:4. the breath of his lips. That the Spirit proceeds from the Son is not stated so explicitly, yet here too the genitive stands: Spirit of the Son: Gal. 4:6. Spirit of Christ, Rom. 8:9. 1 Pet. 1:11. The Spirit of his mouth, 2 Thess. 2:8. On the basis of such words we believe that the Spirit has his being from the Father and the Son, that the Father and the Son breathe forth the Spirit. Note b. The procession is compared to a breath, John 20:22: "he breathed on them." 3:8. But this does not make it comprehensible to us. Note c. In the confession the "et Filio" is found only from 589 onward. Note d. We cannot comprehend the procession of the Spirit. Antithesis. 1. The Greek Catholic Church: the Spirit proceeds only from the Father. 2. Hofmann denies the procession of the Spirit from the Father and the Son.

5. Die Sendung des heiligen Geiſtes

5. Die Sendung des heiligen Geiſtes. Joh. 15, 26.

5. The sending of the Holy Spirit. John 15:26. Here is spoken of an action that is to come. a. The temporal sending rests on the eternal. The sending of one divine person by another rests on the fact that the person sent has not merely had his being communicated to him by the sending person, but has also received the power to reveal himself in time, which is called a sending of that person. b. Through the sending nothing is lacking to the Spirit. He is sent in such a way that he also comes of himself. c. The Holy Spirit did not first come into the world with the sending or outpouring, but only revealed himself in a special manner. John 7:39. d. Why did this sending remain until Pentecost? So that we might learn that we have it through Christ alone. e. The sending is directed only to the disciples. John 7:39. f. The sending of the Spirit is a fruit of redemption. John 16:7: "if I go not away," etc. Gal. 3:13–14. The Spirit would not do his work on us if Christ had not redeemed us. Note. In this lies 1. a comfort — the sending of the Spirit does not depend on our worthiness, 2. an admonition — we may not regard the possession of the Spirit as something to be taken for granted, but as a grace. The office and work of the Spirit.

6. The office and work of the Spirit is, in a word, sanctification. To this belong a. the calling, see "Calling"; b. illumination. The Spirit works faith, the beginning and the outcome of all spiritual life; without faith, no inward working of the Spirit in us can be conceived at all; c. the gathering; d. sanctification. The Spirit teaches us to avoid sin, cleanses us of all love of the world, love of sin, self-love, and works love toward God and all good works in us; e. preservation in the faith. Note a. The Spirit's work is twofold: 1. leading to Christ and keeping us with him (forgiveness of sins and sanctification of life), 2. a working toward the world as over against Christians. He works not only in believers but also in unbelievers who find themselves within reach of the means of grace. Agrippa. Note b. The Spirit does not sit in our heart like an idol in a temple, but makes his dwelling there. Note c. How necessary this work is! After Christ has redeemed mankind, everything depends on their personally appropriating this salvation. This personal appropriation does not happen out of one's own reason (original sin: blind, dead, an enemy of God), but through the Spirit. Note d. That the Spirit works on us is not our merit, but grace. Note e. Of the office and work of the Spirit, one often knows little to say. Acts 19:2: "We have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." Therefore Pentecost, too, is treated as a lesser festival compared to Christmas. Note f. Even in preaching, the working of the Spirit is not always given the place that is due it. We should point to it with more diligence, and not only at Pentecost.

8. The Holy Spirit works upon men and comes into men not without means, not immediately, but through the means of grace: a. through baptism, b. through the Gospel. The Spirit fell on all who listened to the word. Note a. The Spirit comes into our heart (see "Conversion" 314) 1. not through the Law. Gal. 3:2: "Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law?" The Spirit is a gift. L. W. 51, 309. 311. Through the Law the Spirit works only the convicting of sin. Cal. 1909, 37; 2. not in a mechanical way through the mere hearing of the Gospel as a magic formula, but through receiving the Word, through faith. Ma. 31, 156–157; 3. only through the pure Word. Insofar as errors are preached, the Spirit is not present. What does not agree with the Word is not the Holy Spirit. John 16:14: "he shall take of mine." Süd. 98, 19; 4. only through the Word written by the apostles and prophets, not through an inner word; 5. not visibly, as in the first age. Acts 1, 8. Note b. Therefore we should indeed 1. diligently use the means of grace ourselves and bring them near to others. Whoever despises the Word does not become a partaker of the Spirit, or drives him away again, 2. as preachers, direct our attention solely to the Word. The congregation should expect nothing else from its pastor. See "Progress," §6b. Note c. In an extraordinary way the Spirit can come without the Word, as we hope in the case of children who die before baptism. John the Baptist in the womb. God is not bound to the Word, but you are. Note d. We should pray for the Holy Spirit. Luke 11:13: "how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him." This we do in the Second Petition: that our Father in heaven would give us his Holy Spirit. Hymn 130:1. 131:1, 2, 4. 134:1. 140:1. 135:1. We already have the Spirit and still keep asking for him, as a miser keeps asking for ever more money. Note e. The aids that the Spirit needs to lead us to the Word, or to make God's Word alive again in our heart, are all sorts of life experiences. Note f. How the Spirit works in man is a mystery to us. We cannot perceive his work with our senses. The wind blows where it wills. John 3:8. Note g. The coming of the Spirit cannot be meant in a local, spatial sense. Note h. God wills to send his Spirit to all men. Word and sacrament are ordained for all. Antithesis. Sects and enthusiasts point to their striving and wrestling, through which the Spirit is supposed to come without the Word. 9. The indwelling of the Spirit in our heart is a consequence and effect of faith. See "Indwelling." Stöckh. N.T. 270–271. R. Pi. Ev. 312. 10. Application. a. Examination. Have you received the Holy Spirit? Do you know of a time when he entered your heart? Do you have the marks that he still dwells with you? b. Admonition. 1. If you do not yet have the Spirit, let everything go and hold to the Gospel. 2. See to it that you do not resist his working. Man has this sad power. Stubbornness. In the end the Spirit will then indeed cease working also. 3. Let us see to it that we become ever more filled with the gift of the Spirit. How altogether differently would we live to God's honor, how much more zealously would we work in missions! Hymn 140:2. 4. Beware lest you drive the Spirit out of your heart again through willful sins. Rom. 11:20: "Be not highminded, but fear." Heb. 6:6. The Spirit does not dwell where the devil dwells. Note. "Grieve not the Holy Spirit." Eph. 4:30. One cannot grieve him as one grieves a man — anthropopathy. One grieves him when one does not do what the Spirit wills. c. Comfort. 1. Whoever feels the work of the Spirit in himself has a sure mark of the state of grace. Rom. 8:14. 2. If you have hitherto grieved the Spirit, let everything be forgiven when you repent. Homiletics. Cantate. — Gospel. The office of the Spirit. a. Office of conviction, b. office of teaching. — Ma. a. Office of conviction, b. office of comfort, c. office of teaching. — Ma. 10, 156. On the office and work of the Spirit with respect to a. the world, b. believers. The Spirit the true Comforter in spiritual distress. a. That he comforts only those who believe, b. that to them, however, he also gives the most certain comfort. a. Whom, b. how, c. to what end he comforts. — Ma. 16, 147. How gloriously the Spirit comforts Christians, in that he a. convicts the world, b. leads Christians into all truth, c. glorifies Christ in their hearts. — Ma. The business of the Spirit on earth. a. He convicts the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. b. He leads believers into all truth. — Ma. 22, 276. The office of the Spirit for the salvation of the world of sinners. a. Wherein it consists. — Ma. 3, 144. How does the Holy Spirit glorify Christ? — Ma. 12, 128.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
