Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Frende. 1. Sir. 25, 10. 26, 2. Anm. a. Gott will nicht, daß wir Menſchen Sauer⸗ töpfe ſein und freudlos im Winkel ſitzen ſollen. Wir ſol⸗ len fröhlich und luſtig ſein. Anm. b. Beſonders will die Jugend ihre Freude haben. Freue dich. Jüngling, in deiner Jugend. Pred. 11. 9. Darum ſollen Eltern ihren Kindern unſchuldige Freuden gönnen. ſ. Erziehung. Anm. c. Anm. a. Anm. d. Joy. 1. Earthly joy. God has created everything in the world for us men, that we should enjoy the gifts of God and take delight in them, e.g., Ps. 104:15: Wine that maketh glad the heart of man. Joy in nature, in the blessing of the harvest, joy over health after surviving illness, joy in wife and child. Sir. 25:10. 26:2. Note a. God does not want us to be sourpusses, sitting joyless in a corner. We should be cheerful and merry. Note b. Especially the young want to have their joy. Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth. Eccl. 11:9. Therefore parents should grant their children innocent joys. See Upbringing. Note c. Christians 1. receive their hours of joy as coming from the hand of the Lord: 2. recognize that they have not deserved even these joys, but enjoy them for Christ's sake, Gen. 32:10: I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies: 3. take care, in all their joy, not to go further than where sin begins. They enjoy their joy in such a way that they are found in constant readiness, even when they are suddenly torn out of the midst of their joy. 2. Worldly joy. Worldly joy is a sinful joy, in which one a. either delights only in earthly things, in the goods and gifts of God, like the rich man, against the First Commandment, or b. even takes his delight and joy in evil, in sinful things. Lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, pride of life. Note a. Worldly joy 1. is no true joy, but deceptive. Even if someone chases from one pleasure to another, he is not truly happy in it. A rose with many thorns; 2. can satisfy no one; 3. is vain and fleeting, like a drunken stupor, a dream, a shadow; 4. is harmful. It turns the heart away from heavenly joy. How can good grow among thorns and thistles? Worldly joy in the end robs a man of eternal joy. Note b. How can a Christian find pleasure in worldly joy! Note c. If one wants to turn people away from worldly joy, one must offer them something better in its place, heavenly goods instead of earthly ones. Note d. The Christian's faith is the victory that despises and overcomes the world with its sinful joys and pleasures. A Christian sings: What do I care for the world, etc. Hymn 285:1. What are the goods of this life? 375:10. The whole world does not delight me. 271:1. 251:4. 252:1. 259:6.

3. Spiritual joy. True joy is a joy in God, in his attributes, in his mercy, his goodness, in our Savior and the grace won through him, in his word, in his birth (Advent joy, Christmas joy, Ma. 16, 358), in his resurrection (Easter joy), in his return and the time of our final redemption. (Rejoice, the Lord is at hand. Lift up your heads. Ma. 10, 355.) Isa. 61:10: I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God. Phil. 4:4: Rejoice in the Lord alway. Ps. 84:2: My flesh and my heart crieth out for the living God. Luke 1:47: My spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. Jer. 15:16: Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart. — Hymn 108:1. 104. This joy a. is the goal of creation and redemption. b. is destroyed by sin and the devil, c. is obtained through faith. Only by the removal of our sins can true joy come, d. is worked by the Holy Spirit through the Gospel, e. is preserved by a constant, believing return to the peace which Christ's work of redemption has established, f. is strengthened through the Lord's Supper, g. is unknown to unbelievers, h. is a mark of our state of grace, i. is for all: children, young men, poor, rich, the sick, sinners — all should rejoice in his grace, k. is a great joy. The greater the sorrow over sin, the greater the joy over pardon, l. has no end. Worldly joy passes away, the Christian's joy remains. No man taketh your joy from you. John 16:22. Rejoicing always. 2 Cor. 6:10. Note a. Outwardly the Christian is often in fear and affliction, weeping lies nearer to him than laughter, but joy keeps breaking through again and again. Note b. The way to joy leads through sorrow. Your sorrow shall be turned into joy. Note c. How often God calls us to joy! Phil. 4:4: rejoice, Rom. 12:12: rejoicing in hope, Zech. 9:9: Daughter of Zion, rejoice greatly. Note d. A Christian rejoices over earthly things, but far more over heavenly things. Note e. Such joy makes us diligent laborers in God's kingdom.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
