Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Fleeing. It is no wrong to flee from tyrants, to yield to violence and persecution, and to seek out a place where one can dwell safely. This is proven by a. the counsel of Christ to his disciples: Matt. 24:16: Then let them flee into the mountains. 10:23: flee ye into another: b. the example of godly Christians: Jacob, Gen. 2:13. David flees from Saul, 1 Sam. 19:10, from his son Absalom, 2 Sam. 15:14. The flight of Jesus into Egypt. Peter's flight from prison. — Cyprian. Jo. 1900, 26. Note. Fleeing is wrong only when one is under a definite command to remain, or is bound to remain by a definite calling. The duties of children toward parents, of spouses toward one another, of a pastor toward his flock, can make remaining a duty. See Calling of the Pastor, § 30. Essays. Min. 89, 19—34. R. Pieper, Cat. 1, 63-64. Cursing.

1. Was heiſit fluchen? Fluchen heißt Böſes wünſchen

1. Was heiſit fluchen? Fluchen heißt Böſes wünſchen. Gott verfluchte die Schlange, daß ſie auf dem Bauche gehen ſollte. Ham wurde verflucht, daß er ein Knecht aller Knechte ſei. Anm. a. Dadurch will man Gott in ſeinen Dienſt ſtellen. Gott ſoll ſo geſinnt ſein, wie der mit Zorn und Haß erfüllte Menſch. ſoll Donner, Vlitz u. ſ. w. aufbieten, um das auszuführen, was der Menſch in ſeinem Zorn will. Anm. c.

1. What does it mean to curse? Cursing means wishing someone evil. God cursed the serpent, that it should go upon its belly. Ham was cursed, that he should be a servant of servants. Note a. Even if one does not take all sorts of curse-words into one's mouth, but merely wishes someone evil, this amounts to the same thing as cursing. Note b. It is even more shameful when one uses God's name for this and makes it a cloak for one's malice. By this one seeks to press God into one's own service. God is supposed to be of the same mind as the man filled with wrath and hatred, is supposed to summon thunder, lightning, etc., to carry out what the man wants in his anger. Note c. But even when one does not use God's name in doing so, it is still God who is to carry out the evil that we wish upon our neighbor. Therefore every curse is a calling upon God. Note d. One can wish evil upon God, upon oneself, and upon one's neighbor.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
