Collection › Eckhardt's Reallexikon › index › fürsprecher
A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.
The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.
Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.
4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR
The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

2. Hierbei ſind folgende Stücke zu beachten: a. Anm. a. Anm. a. 17, 20. Pſ. 69, 7. Für Pet⸗ ö rus. Luk. 22, 32: Ich habe für dich gebeten; 2. für die Übeltäter, Jeſ. 53, 12. für ſeine Mör⸗ der. Luk. 23. 34. Anm. b. Und wie hat er gebetet! Er fiel nieder auf ſein Angeſicht. Matth. 26, 39. kniete nieder, Luk. 22, 41. hob ſeine Augen auf, Joh. 11, 41. 17, 1. Mark. 7, 34. Summa. Hebr. 5, 7. Einwand a. Joh. 17, 9. Ich bitte nicht für die Welt. Einwand b. Joh. 17, 24. Anm. a. Tue, was dieſer Sünder bittet, er iſt mein Erlöſter u. ſ. w. 3. Reader, 11. 12. Christ our advocate. Anm. b. Hebr. 5, 7: und iſt auch erhöret. Joh. 11, 42: Ich weiß, daß du mich allezeit höreſt. — Sollte Gott ſeinem Sohn etwas abſchlagen? hört doch ſchon ein Vater die gerechten Bitten ner Kinder. Anm. a. 2. Here the following points are to be noted: a. Who prays for us? He who makes intercession is Christ, the God-man, who sits at the right hand of God. Note a. It is precisely for this reason that he sat down at the right hand of God: now to appear in the presence of God for us. Heb. 9:24. Note b. "If any man sin, we have an advocate... Jesus Christ the righteous," 1 John 2:1, is not meant to say that he extends his intercession only to those who are worthy of it. He is also called righteous because he makes righteous. Note c. Because it is the exalted One who makes intercession, it goes without saying that this intercession does not take place in humility, in forma servili, in bending the knee, in spreading out the hands. Note d. There is only one Advocate. 1. To be sure, the Holy Spirit too is called an advocate, Rom. 8:26: the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us; but Christ pleads our cause with God, the Spirit of God pleads God's cause with us; Christ prays for us, the Spirit prays with us. 2. To be sure, Christians too make intercession with God, e.g., parents for their children, but they are advocates on earth, and their intercession is heard only when it happens through Christ, in Christ's name. Answer. The papists set Mary and the saints, with their merit, alongside Christ as intercessors. b. How does this intercession come to expression? This intercession 1. does not consist merely in Christ's merit, which moves God to be continually gracious to us. It is not Christ's merit, but Christ himself, who speaks; 2. is rather real, an actual act, which comes to expression in heavenly words and petitions. Note. How it takes place is not revealed to us, nor is it necessary to know. Answer. Socinians, papists, and many Calvinists deny this intercession proprie dicta and understand by it only the help that Christ renders to men in the work of self-sanctification, by restraining them from sin and inciting them to a godly life through his word and example. c. For whom does he pray? He prays 1. for all men, 2. especially for believers, 3. no longer for the hardened and for the damned. Note a. In the state of humiliation he prayed 1. for his disciples, John 14:16: I will pray the Father, John 17:9: I pray for them: I pray not for the world. 17:20. Ps. 69:6. For Peter. Luke 22:32: I have prayed for thee; 2. for the evildoers, Isa. 53:12, for his murderers. Luke 23:34. Note b. And how did he pray! He fell on his face, Matt. 26:39, kneeled down, Luke 22:41, lifted up his eyes, John 11:41. 17:1. Mark 7:34. In sum, Heb. 5:7. Objection a. John 17:9: I pray not for the world. Objection b. I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you. John 16:26. — He does not wish to speak of this now, but to announce to them something greater, that as Christians and priests they themselves have free access to God. This does not abolish Christ's intercession. d. For what does he pray? He prays 1. for the unconverted, that they may be converted. Luke 13:8: Lord, let it alone this year also, etc.; 2. for the converted, that they may remain in the faith and at last see his glory. John 17:24. Note a. He will say: Father, be gracious to them. Have I not shed my blood for them? Do what this sinner asks, he is my redeemed one, etc. 3. Reader, 11-12. Christ our advocate. Note b. Christ's intercession has to do with the gathering and preservation of the Church. e. What success does this intercession have? Christ's intercession 1. gives power to our prayer. Christ unites his high-priestly intercession with our petition. As often as we pray, he stands at our side and supports our request; 2. is heard. Heb. 5:7: and was heard. John 11:42: I knew that thou hearest me always. — Would God refuse his Son anything? Even an earthly father hears the just requests of his children. Note a. What power and influence a man's intercession has! E.g., the intercession, Num. 14:19-20. Exod. 32:32-33. Note b. What value it already has here on earth, to have advocates with great lords (kings, etc.)! Note c. In the state of humiliation, this intercession was at the same time satisfaction for our sin. Note d. What comfort lies in this doctrine for us, in the distress of sin and in earthly distress. He brings all our concerns and needs before God. Therefore we too should hand over our case to our Advocate, and be cheerful and confident that he will conduct the case. Note e. This doctrine is abused when men think that they may now neglect prayer and remain in fleshly security. Note f. That Christ still intercedes for his own even after the Last Day is believed by Calov and Quenstedt. — Yet the passages that speak of Christ's intercession presuppose the conditions existing before the Last Day. — Heb. 7:25: "he ever liveth to make intercession for them" is qualified by the preceding words: that come unto God — so long as this "coming" continues, through repentance and faith. Homiletics. Rogate — Gospel. On the intercession of our Lord Jesus Christ. a. The right doctrine of it, b. the right use of this doctrine. — Ma. 10, 158. Free Texts. John 17:24. Christ's intercession for his own. a. What it consists in, b. to whom this intercession redounds. — Ma. 28, 78. Exod. 32:30-34. Moses as mediator and advocate for his people. a. How Moses wrestled with God in prayer for the sins of his people, b. how we have a greater, the true Advocate, Jesus Christ. — Ma. 30, 188. 1 John 2:1-2. Christ as our Advocate with the Father. a. What his advocacy is, b. how comforting it is. — Ma. 11, 66.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page.
