A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri
Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at
St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses,
and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by
volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's
own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation
below is a link to that page.
Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set
them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them —
Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds
Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.
4,478 entries
under 828 headwords, carrying
129,203 citations and
2,331 fragments too damaged to read
· built 2026-09-16.
uncorrected OCR
The German below is machine transcription of
the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read
against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a
garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

1. A distinction must be made between the Gospel in the narrower and in the broader sense. In the broader sense it denotes the whole doctrine of Christ, including the Law. Mark 1:1: The beginning of the gospel. The words "preach the Gospel," Luke 24:47, are rendered as preaching repentance and forgiveness. According to Rom. 2:16, God will judge the world "according to my gospel."
Note. This is a synecdoche, the main part standing for the whole.

Der köſtliche Inhalt dieſer Botſchaft iſt:
a. 1 Kor. 15, 3. Das Wort vom Kreuz. 1 Kor. 1, 18.
b. Gott iſt uns gnädig in Chriſto. Das Evange⸗— lium von der Gnade. Ap. 20, 24.
Anm.
f. Der Feind iſt überwunden.
Goliath.
g. Die Sünde iſt getilgt.
h. Das Erlöſungswerk iſt vollbracht.

2. The Gospel is a joyful message. The precious content of this message is:
a. Christ died on the cross for our sins. 1 Cor. 15:3. The word of the cross. 1 Cor. 1:18.
b. God is gracious to us in Christ. The Gospel of grace. Acts 20:24.
Note. What joyful news, when a pardon is announced to one condemned to death!
c. God is perfectly reconciled with all men through Christ. 2 Cor. 5:19: the word of reconciliation.
d. The debt is paid.
e. The Law has been fulfilled for us. Christ is the end of the Law.
Note. The Gospel is rightly understood only in its relation to the Law. If the Gospel did not proclaim a perfect satisfaction of the Law, the Gospel would have no value at all, no right to exist.
f. The enemy is overcome. Goliath.
g. Sin is blotted out.
h. The work of redemption is accomplished.
i. Christ has done the work that we should have done. 1 Cor. 2:2. The preaching of Christ. Christ's person and work.
k. Come, buy without money. Isa. 55:1. Invitation.
Note a. The Gospel
1. tells of the great deeds of God;
2. offers men everything that Christ has won;
3. includes within itself all the doctrines of salvation;
4. is the core of Scripture. See Christ. Justification;
5. reveals to us God's will for our salvation. 1 Tim. 2:4: God will have all men to be saved, and so forth.
Note b. The Gospel in nuce [in a nutshell] is, for example, Gen. 3:15: the seed of the woman, and so forth. Luke 2:10-11: unto you is born this day a Savior. It is finished.
Note c. How joyful and rich in blessing this content is!
Note d. Many do not know what the Gospel is and have entirely wrong notions about it.

Notwendigkeit des Evangelii
Anm. a.

3. The necessity of the Gospel. Since God is reconciled with all men, God must make this known to men. This happens through the Gospel.
Note a. It is not enough for man to form all sorts of thoughts about a gracious God. He must have an express declaration, given by God himself.
Note b. What good would it do us if God had redeemed us and it were kept secret from us; if God had left a testament and it were never opened! Then the redemption of Christ would be a treasure lying in the depths of the sea.
Note c. One must now hold to this declaration of God, and not gaze into our own heart, or, like the rationalists, contemplate nature, or, like the fanatics, point to inward spiritual struggles. Rom. 10:6-8: The word is near you.

Urſprung des Evangeliums
Anm. a.
dem Evangelium;
b. von Gott. 1 Kor. 2, 7—10: Uns hat es Gott
geoffenbart. Kol. 1, 26. 1 Kor. 15, 3: welches ich

16, 6., durch Apoſtel und Propheten. Röm. 16,

Anm. a. Das Evangelium iſt Gottes Werk nach Ur⸗
ſprung, Zubereitung, Vollführung, Verkündigung. Anm. b. Die Gnade und Wahrheit iſt durch Jeſum
Chriſtum worden. Joh. 1, 17. Sie konnte nicht wie
das Geſetz einfach verkündigt, gegeben werden, ſondern
mußte zuſtande gebracht werden.

4. The origin of the Gospel. The Gospel is
a. not from men. That God is reconciled with us — no man could know that from his own reason. We do not find the Gospel in the systems of heathen philosophy. 1 Cor. 2:13: not in words which man's wisdom teaches.
Note a. Therefore the Gospel is called a mystery that has been kept secret from the world, Rom. 16:25-26: has been hidden from the world. Col. 1:25-29. The mystery of the Gospel. Eph. 6:19: the mystery of Christ. 1 Tim. 3:16: the mystery of godliness.
Note b. With respect to the Law, man finds a point of contact within himself, but it is not so with the Gospel;
b. from God. 1 Cor. 2:7-10: God has revealed it to us. Col. 1:26. 1 Cor. 15:3: which I also received. And indeed God has made the Gospel known to men
1. directly, for example in Paradise. Gen. 3:15. Abraham. How Christ preached the Gospel!
2. indirectly, through angels, Luke 2:10, Mark 16:6; through apostles and prophets. Rom. 16:26: made manifest, also made known through the writings of the prophets. Inspiration. The preaching office.
Note a. The Gospel is God's work in its origin, preparation, accomplishment, and proclamation.
Note b. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17. It could not simply be proclaimed and given, as the Law was, but had to be brought about.

6. The Gospel is
a. not an empty sound, not a mere report, a narrative about God's grace, but rather
b. a means of grace. A bestowal. It gives and grants what it says and promises.
Note a. This is often already the case with the words of men. The herald of peace, with his message, brings peace along with it. When the judge says to the condemned man, "You are free," freedom is thereby granted to him.
Note b. The Gospel is absolution. See Absolution § 6.
Note c. Through the Gospel men are justified.
Note d. This bestowal comes to all who hear the Gospel.
Note e. The form of the Gospel varies. Absolution, Baptism, and the Lord's Supper are Gospel. See The Lord's Supper. § 48, b.
Note f. Man must hold to this means of grace. God distributes his grace in no other way.
Antithesis. The Reformed. The Gospel is no means of grace, but a mere narrative. — "They tear away bridge and footpath." Luther.

a. illumines, 2 Pet. 1:19. The light shines in a dark place, until the day dawns. The Gospel is the source of all spiritual light and life (Ma. 27, 364), the sun of salvation. 2 Cor. 4:4. The bright light of the Gospel.
Note. Where the Gospel is not, there is night (Isa. 60:2: darkness covers the earth), everything spiritually dead, a wasteland full of idolatry and superstition;
b. converts, for example the Corinthians. 1 Cor. 12:2: You know that you were Gentiles. 1 Cor. 15:3: which (namely the Gospel) you also received;
c. works regeneration;
d. bestows faith. Rom. 10:17: So faith comes by hearing. John 17:20: who believe in me through their word. 1 Cor. 3:5: ministers are they, through whom you came to believe;
e. gives the Spirit. Gal. 3:2: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by the hearing of faith? 2 Cor. 3:8: the ministry that gives the Spirit;
f. creates new life;
g. makes alive. 2 Cor. 3:6: the Spirit gives life. The Spirit is the Gospel;
h. is the source of sanctification;
i. is the only means to free us from the dominion of sin. Sin shall not have dominion over you;
k. drives to good works. Let us love him, for he first loved us. If we have the Gospel, everything else falls into place with us;
l. gives strength for the battle;
m. transforms the whole man. Saul;
n. preserves us in faith. Preservation;
o. strengthens the new man. Renewal. The more the Gospel works on us, the more we put on the new man;
p. is the source of right zeal for all work in the kingdom of God;
q. raises up those who are terrified;
r. gives comfort in trial. Without the Gospel, religion would be the greatest torment of mankind;
s. brings heavenly peace. Eph. 6:15: the gospel of peace. 2:17: preached peace in the Gospel;
t. bestows true freedom;
u. protects against false doctrine. Whoever has rightly grasped the Gospel, the core of Scripture, will not so easily fall into false doctrine;
v. gives the church unity;
w. overcomes death;
x. saves. Rom. 1:17: the power of God unto salvation. Eph. 1:13: the gospel of your salvation. 1 Cor. 15:2: by which you are also saved. Acts 11:14: he will tell you words whereby you shall be saved. James 1:21: which is able to save your souls. 1 Tim. 4:16: in doing this you shall save both yourself and those who hear you. 2 Tim. 3:15: the Scriptures are able to make you wise unto salvation;
y. effects everything that the church enjoys in eternity, the renewal of the divine image, eternal glory, and so forth.
Note a. The Gospel is a powerful thing, a hammer that shatters rocks.
Note b. The Gospel has such power
1. regardless of who hears it, for all people, without respect of persons. Bread and medicine have their effect wherever they are taken;
2. regardless of whether one hears the Gospel or reads it;
3. regardless of who proclaims it to us. If the devil, or a stone, were to preach the Gospel to us, it would be effective.
Note c. The Gospel has such power not because the words in themselves possess such power, but because it is God who works on man through such a word. The Gospel is not a letter, but spirit.
Note d. The Gospel has shattered the idols of the heathen, destroyed the power of the pope, and made Christians courageous in persecutions.
Note e. We should not lose our confidence in the Gospel when we do not see its effect at once.
Note f. Man can thwart the effect of the Gospel.
Note g. What folly is committed by those who keep themselves far from the Gospel!

8. Was das Evangelium verheiſt und ſchenkt, gibt ee
ohne alle Bedingung. L. W. 29, 193—256.
Anm. a.
L. W. 33. 354 —356. Antith. Das Evangelium im eigentlichen Sinn ſei
Bußpredigt. Papiſten, Antinomer, Melanchthon.
Anm. c. Sofern die Predigt von Chriſti Leiden die
Größe der Sünde offenbart, iſt ſie Geſetzespredigt. Aus
dem ſchönſten Evangelium kann man geſetzliche Anwen⸗
dungen machen.
Anm. d. Das Evangelium wird Geſetz genannt. Jei.
2., 3.: Von Zion wird das Geſetz ausgehen. Röm. 3, 27:
Das Geſetz des Glaubens.

8. What the Gospel promises and grants, it gives without any condition. L. W. 29, 193-256.
Note a. Because the Gospel is a joyful message, there can be no talk of demands of the Gospel.
Note b. The Gospel does not demand faith in the sense of requiring a performance from man. And it demands even faith not as a moral act of man, but as the way to the goal.
Objection. The Book of Concord calls the Gospel a preaching of repentance. Konk. 98, § 62-63: the Gospel rebukes all men. The preaching of repentance, or this voice of the Gospel: Amend your lives, repent, and so forth. — Against this:
1. The Gospel in the proper sense is no preaching of repentance. John 5:45.
2. The Book of Concord interprets itself. "It is dangerous and wrong to want to make a preaching of repentance out of the Gospel." 639, § 27.
3. When the Gospel is called a preaching of repentance, the Gospel in the broader sense is meant, including the Law.
4. To what extent the Gospel might be called a preaching of repentance (because it is a preaching for the penitent, and so forth), see L. W. 33, 354-356.
Antithesis. That the Gospel in the proper sense is a preaching of repentance. Papists, Antinomians, Melanchthon.
Note c. Insofar as the preaching of Christ's suffering reveals the magnitude of sin, it is a preaching of the Law. Legal applications can be drawn even from the most beautiful Gospel.
Note d. The Gospel is called Law. Isa. 2:3: out of Zion shall go forth the law. Rom. 3:27: the law of faith.

Mark. 16, 15: Prediget das Evange—
lium. Wer ſoll das tun?
a. Alle Chriſten. Dieſe frohe Botſchaft ſoll
einer dem andern erzählen. Die Hirten.
Anm. a.

Matth. 22,
3. 4. Die Gäſte zur Hochzeit rufen. Lehrer zur
Gerechtigkeit Joel 2, 23. Boten des Friedens. Jeſ.
52, 7. Die Geſetzespredigt geſchieht nur nebenbei;
2. das eigentliche Amt des neuen Teſtaments. 2
digen;
Gottes.
Anm. a.
— Was wird in Sektenkirchen ge— predigt!
bekehren.
2. träge zu guten Werken. Dagegen:

9. The Gospel is to be preached and proclaimed in the world. Mark 16:15: Preach the Gospel. Who is to do this?
a. All Christians. Each is to tell this joyful message to the other. The shepherds.
Note a. The proclamation of the Gospel is
1. the proper calling of the Christian,
2. the task of the church. If the church neglects this, she ceases to be a church,
3. the mark of the church,
4. the distinguishing feature between Christendom and the world.
Note b. The Gospel was not given to Peter alone, but to the church. Konk. 341, § 67. Where the church is, there is the command to preach the Gospel.
Note c. Only the Christian can rightly preach the Gospel; to the non-Christian the Gospel is a sealed book.
b. The preachers, in particular. The preaching office. 1 Cor. 1:23: we preach Christ crucified. 1 Cor. 2:2: I determined not to know anything, and so forth. 1 Cor. 15:1: the Gospel which I preached to you. — This is
1. the proper office of the pastor. Matt. 22:3-4: call the guests to the wedding. Teachers of righteousness. Joel 2:23. Messengers of peace. Isa. 52:7. The preaching of the Law happens only incidentally;
2. the proper office of the New Testament. 2 Cor. 3:6: the ministry not of the letter, but of the Spirit. 1 Cor. 1:17: Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Gospel;
3. a high office, higher than the office of a president;
4. an honorable office. We are fellow workers of God.
Note a. The preaching of the Gospel is the most important business in the world. It is for the sake of the Gospel that the world still stands. Without the Gospel no man can be saved. — Therefore we should not make the preaching of the Gospel a side matter or a third-class business.
Note b. The preaching of the Gospel is a congregation's greatest treasure. — Were a congregation to have a million-dollar house of worship, the best constitution, a preacher wiser than Solomon, congregational and choir singing equal to the angels' — without the Gospel all of it would be a whitewashed tomb, while of the humblest log church, where the Gospel is preached, it holds true: This is the gate of heaven. Gen. 28:17. Luther: The Gospel is the true treasure of the church. Thesis 62. Cal. 1904, 23-24. 95, 53-54.
Note c. Happy the congregation that has a Gospel-preaching pastor.
Note d. Many preach little of the Gospel, or preach it falsely. Christ is a mere hero of virtue, Ma. 30, 244; a new lawgiver, Baier 3, 394. False prophets seek to make "their gospel" agreeable to the world. — What is preached in the sectarian churches! Locusts, lice, cholera, and whatever other plagues there are — all of that is a small thing compared to the teachers who come in the name of Christ and yet do not form Christ, the only comfort, in men's hearts.
Note e. Whoever acts according to a different instruction is no Lutheran preacher.
Note f. To be sure, a pastor should also preach the Law, but the Gospel should predominate in all his sermons. 1 Cor. 15:3: I delivered to you first of all (among the very first things). Konk. 61, § 48.
Note g. The preaching of the Gospel has made our Synod great.
Note. The pastor's entire private pastoral care, too, should be carried out in an evangelical sense and spirit.
Objection of the Pietists: The Gospel should not be given so much prominence. Too much Gospel makes
1. people secure, so that they are not properly converted.
2. slothful toward good works.
Against this:
a. Abuse of the doctrine is not the fault of the Gospel. Rom. 3:8: whose condemnation is entirely just.
b. We are to hold to God's command and leave the consequences to him.
c. Exactly the opposite is the case. Rom. 6:14: sin shall not have dominion over you.
d. On account of some who despise the food, we are not to withhold the food from the hungry.
Objection of the Pharisees: They have long since worn that out at the heels. The pastor should preach something new for once. — Then he would lose both those inside and those outside.
Note g. Every sermon should contain enough Gospel that whoever hears it can be saved.
Note h. What a privilege, when the preaching of the Gospel is not hindered by state laws!

12. Faith and the Gospel. The Gospel should be accepted by all men. Acceptance of the Gospel is faith. The Gospel calls for nothing but believing hearts.
Note a. The right relation to the Gospel consists in
1. hearing the Gospel diligently,
2. coming to love it,
3. appropriating to oneself the blessings it contains: I am redeemed. My sin is blotted out.
Note b. Making the application to oneself is difficult, because in ourselves we see nothing but sin, and it does not happen through one's own reason.
Note c. Faith obtains everything that the Gospel promises.
Note d. There is no other way to come into possession of the heavenly blessings. Whoever does not believe is condemned.
Note e. The natural man cannot believe and accept the Gospel.
