Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Essays. O. 91 and 92. Only through faithful adherence to the divine Word can true renewal come about among us. Baier 3, 299—314. De renovatione [On renewal]. Renewal. Outline. Renewal in the narrower and the broader sense. § 1. What renewal consists in. § 2. Justification and renewal. § 3. God wills renewal, and it is necessary. § 4. God's work. § 5. Renewal happens by degrees and is imperfect. § 6. The means is God's Word. § 7. 1. A distinction must be made between renewal in the broader sense (the whole work that the Spirit does on the sinner; regeneration is included here. Titus 3:5: the washing of regeneration and renewal) and in the narrower sense (sanctification). Note a. Renewal in the broader sense is the restoration of everything we lost through Adam's fall. To understand rightly what is to be renewed, one must consider the divine image and the fall into sin together with the corruption of original sin. Note b. The daily renewal is the continuation of the work of grace that began in justification. 2. Renewal in the narrower sense consists in the putting off of the old man (terminus a quo) and the growth of the new man. Note a. Renewal takes place predominantly in the inner man (Rom. 12:2: the renewing of your mind). But it then also exerts influence on outward behavior, for example 1. in good works, the fruits of renewal, 2. through separation from the world and its ways. Note b. Among the fanatics, renewal consists mostly in outward things: not smoking, not drinking beer. Note c. The goal of renewal is God's will, or the new man himself, but not eternal life, which is only the end of renewal. 3. Justification and renewal. a. Renewal follows justification. First redemption, justification, then sanctification. Note a. Justification is the spiritual creation, the daily renewal its preservation. Planting and watering. Note b. Both must be strictly distinguished in a Christian. b. Renewal contributes nothing to justification. c. If renewal ceases, then justification ceases too.

4. Renewal a. God wills it. Rom. 12:2: be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Eph. 4:23: be renewed in the spirit of your mind. 2 Cor. 4:16: the inward man is renewed day by day. Note a. Renewal was God's goal in 1. redemption. 2 Cor. 5:15: he therefore died for all, and so forth, "that I may be his own," 2. the calling. 1 Thess. 4:7: not called to uncleanness, but to holiness, 3. justification. Rom. 6:22: your fruit unto holiness. God does not forgive so that we should go on continuing in sin, 4. everything that God does in us spiritually. Note b. In a whole congregation and synod, too, everything is to become new. Titus 2:14: a people of his own, zealous [for good works], and so forth. Eph. 4:13. We are all to attain — and become a perfect man; b. is necessary. 1. It always hangs together with justification. Where there is no renewal, there is no true faith. 2. Without renewal no one is saved. 3. Through a life in sin, justification is lost. The heart runs wild, like a tree that is not pruned, like a garden in which the weeds are not removed.

Phil. 2, 13. Wollen und Vollbringen. Phil. 1, 6: er voll⸗ führt das gute Werk. 1 Theſſ. 5, 23. 24: Er heilige euch durch und durch. Konk. 711. § 32. Anm. a.

5. Renewal is God's work — indirectly, in that by preserving and nourishing the tree he also brings it about that the tree bears fruit; directly, in that he himself works in us everything that belongs to renewal. Phil. 2:13: to will and to work. Phil. 1:6: he will perform the good work. 1 Thess. 5:23-24: may he sanctify you wholly. Konk. 711, § 32. Note a. Sometimes it says: God renews man, Ps. 51:10: create in me a new, steadfast spirit; sometimes: man renews himself. Ezek. 18:31: make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Transitive and intransitive — both amount to the same thing. Note b. The new man cooperates, yet his working is not coordinated with God's working, like two horses before a wagon, but subordinated. Man works only so much as the Spirit drives him. Note c. First God renews man; only then is man's new will an instrument and tool of God. Note d. In man's cooperation there is no merit. Note e. Man must first be saved and possess heaven before he can cooperate. Note f. Non-Christians cannot renew themselves, since they are spiritually dead. Note g. The subjectum quo [the subject in which it occurs] is the soul. Yet the body, too, is not uninvolved in it. 1 Thess. 5:23: your spirit, together with soul and body. Rom. 6:13, 19: do not yield your members to sin.

6. Renewal a. happens by degrees, here as regards its beginning. When we come to faith, God does not at once tear out all the roots of sin. Therefore 1. renewal must be a constant, daily thing, running through the whole of life, 2. the Christian must grow in renewal like a tree. Eph. 4:15: grow up in all things. 3:16: be strengthened in the inner man. 1 Cor. 15:58: always abounding in the work of the Lord. Konk. 502, § 24-25. Note. Why has God not, as he certainly could have, renewed us perfectly in a single moment? It did not please him to do so; b. renewal here on earth is never perfect. Phil. 3:12: not that I have already attained. Rom. 7:18: how to perform that which is good I find not. Konk. 641, § 7. 604, § 68. Knowledge, faith, love are still weak. The old Adam remains. Objection. Phil. 3:15: as many as are perfect. 1 John 4:17: his love is made perfect in us. Antithesis. Methodists (perfect sanctification), Socinians, Quakers, Catholics (the superfluous merit of the saints).

7. Das Mittel der Erneuerung iſt Gottes Wort

Homiletik. 19. Sonntag nach Trin. — Epi. — Ma. „313. Von der täglichen Erneuerung. a. Dieſe Erneuerung im allgemeinen, b. et— liche Stücke derſelben. — Ma. 11, 314. Pfingſten 1. — Epi. Geiſtes. a. 7. The means of renewal is God's Word. Ps. 119:9: if he takes heed according to your word. V. 105: a lamp to my feet. Notes on this: 1. The Word does not merely command — otherwise all good intentions would be in vain — but it works in us. 2. The whole Word. All the doctrines are useful for improvement. 2 Tim. 3:16. 3. The Gospel is the bread of life that nourishes the new man. 1 Pet. 2:2: desire the sincere milk of the word, and so forth. — The Law can increase neither faith nor love. Therefore one must appeal evangelically when one wants to remedy abuses in the congregation, for example Col. 3:12: Put on therefore, as the elect of God, and so forth. 4. We are to use the Word daily and diligently. Col. 3:16: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Ps. 119:43. Since renewal is to continue through the whole of life, there never comes a time when we can do without the Word. The less spiritual nourishment, the slower the growth. 5. What a comfort for a pastor: the Word will do it! 6. All works that are not wrought through the Word — O. 92, 19-37 — outward works, self-chosen works, works done with denial of the doctrine, do not belong to renewal. 7. Among the means of renewal also belong — O. 92, 58-59 — Baptism and the Lord's Supper. The more we remember our Baptism, the more the old man is drowned. Homiletics. 19th Sunday after Trinity. — Epistle. On the daily renewal of Christians. a. What it consists in, b. why we should daily apply ourselves to such renewal, c. by what it becomes evident that we stand in daily renewal. — Ma. 8, 311. On the continual renewal that the Christian should apply himself to. a. What it consists in, b. how it should be shaped with regard to individual sins. — Ma. 17, 313. On daily renewal. a. This renewal in general, b. some particulars of it. — Ma. 11, 314. Pentecost 1. — Epistle. The renewal of the world through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. a. That the outpouring was to bring about the renewal of the world, b. that and how, from Pentecost onward, the renewal of the world has really begun and continues on to its goal. — Loch. Epi. 463.
