1. Der Zuſtand vor und nach der Erleuchtung:
a. Vor der Erleuchtung. Erleuchtung ſetzt
Finſternis voraus. Eph. 5, 8: Ihr waret weiland Fin⸗
ſternis. 1 Kor. 2, 14: vernimmt nichts, kann es nicht
erkennen.
Anm. a. Woher kommt dieſer Zuſtand? Der Gott
dieſer Welt hat ihre Sinne verblendet. 2 Kor. 4, 4. —
Anm a. Verſchiedene Gedanken darüber:
1. Der Glaube iſt ein neues Licht
im Herzen.
Konk. 98, § 64.
2. Das Licht erquickt, belebt
und erfreut den
Menſchen.
1. Das Erkennen iſt ein gläubiges Erken⸗
nen.
5. Die Erleuchtung bezieht ſich nur auf geiſtliche
Dinge.
6. Die Erleuchtung iſt nicht bloß Aufklärung,
ſondern gibt volles Licht.
7. Die Erleuchtung iſt dasſelbe wie Glaube, Be⸗
kehrung und Wiedergeburt.
Anm. b.
Definition.
Anm. c. Zu unterſcheiden iſt die er ſte Erleuchtung
(Bekehrung) und die fortgehende Erleuchtung als
Zuſtand im Menſchen.
Anm. d. Was wird erleuchtet? Das Herz, der Ver ⸗
ſtand, die Augen. Eph. 1, 18: erleuchtete Augen eures
Verſtändniſſes. Ap. 26, 18.
Anm. e.

2. Erleuchtung iſt ein Werk Gottes. 2 Kor. 4, 3—6:

Gott wirkt
a. nicht ohne Mittel.
Gott gibt ſeinen Geiſt
— Schwärmer, Zwingli:
niemand ohne durchs Wort.
Der Geiſt muß es tun;
1 Petr. 1, 23:
wiedergeboren aus dem lebendigen Wort. Jak. 1, 18.
Darum iſt das Evangelium
gezeugt durch das Wort.
ein helles Licht. 2 Kor. 4, 4. 2 Petr. 1, 19.
Anm. a. Von den Wirkungen des Geſetes kann
hier keine Rede ſein. Das Geſetz erleuchtet nicht.
Anm. b.
nicht hinaus;
c. durch ſeine Werkzeuge, inſonderheit die
Prediger. 2 Kor. 4, 6: auf daß durch uns entſtünde
die Erleuchtung.
Anm. Darum ſollte ein Prediger
1. ein Chriſt ſein. Mag auch ein Blinder einem
Blinden den Weg weiſen? Luk. 6, 39.

2 Kor.
3, 5. daß wir tüchtig ſind, iſt von Gott.
4. Die fortlaufende Erleuchtung.
a. iſt ein beſtändiges Lehren, Erinnern, Leiten in die Wahrheit:
b. geſchieht ſtufenweiſe. Verſchiedene Grade: Stark- und Schwachgläubige. Erkenntnisreiche und Erkenntnisarme. — Darum wachſen in Erkenntnis. Vollkommenheit im ewigen Leben.
Anm. a. 2 Kor. 3, 18. Eine Doſis nach der andern. (3. Artikel: mit
ſeinen Gaben.) Jede neue Erkenntnis, jedes beſſere Verſtändnis iſt eine neue Gabe. Lied 183: und mit Gaben zieret ſchöne.
Anm. b. Es gibt auch eine Morgendämmerung;
2. Paſtoren keine Gelegenheit verſäumen, das
Wort zu predigen;

1. The condition before and after illumination:
a. Before illumination. Illumination presupposes darkness. Eph. 5:8: You were once darkness. 1 Cor. 2:14: perceives nothing, cannot know it.
Note a. Where does this condition come from? The god of this world has blinded their minds. 2 Cor. 4:4. — Originally man's heart was light, but they listened to Satan's voice.
Note b. The light shines in the darkness, but men have not grasped it. They have ears and do not hear.
b. After illumination. Now all is light and bright. Now we recognize God and Christ as our Savior, and understand the Gospel.
Note a. Various thoughts on this:
1. Faith is a new light in the heart. Konk. 98, § 64.
2. The light refreshes, quickens, and gladdens man.
3. How blessed is one who is illumined! In the shining of the sun of grace the hard ice has melted from his heart.
4. Knowing is a believing knowing.
5. Illumination pertains only to spiritual things.
6. Illumination is not mere enlightenment, but gives full light.
7. Illumination is the same as faith, conversion, and regeneration.
Note b. Definition. Illumination is the light of believing knowledge kindled by the Spirit in the heart of man.
Note c. A distinction must be made between the first illumination (conversion) and the ongoing illumination as a condition in man.
Note d. What is illumined? The heart, the understanding, the eyes. Eph. 1:18: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened. Acts 26:18.
Note e. "Enlightened [me] with his gifts." By the gifts is not to be understood Law and Gospel, but the knowledge of salvation, the spirit of wisdom, Eph. 1:17. The gift of faith.
Note f. The purpose of illumination is: the knowledge of the glory of God, 2 Cor. 4:6 (God's love and mercy, his glory. The hope of your calling. Eph. 1:18).
2. Illumination is a work of God. 2 Cor. 4:3-6: God has shone a bright light into our hearts. Matt. 16:17: flesh and blood has not revealed this to you. Luke 24:45: Christ opened their understanding. Acts 16:14: the Lord opened Lydia's heart.
Note a. Types are
1. creation. Let there be light. 2 Cor. 4:6;
2. the healing of the blind. Luke 18:34-43: Lord, that I might see.
Note b. Excluded is
1. all merit,
2. all cooperation of man. Man is the subjectum illuminandi [the subject being illumined]. Yet one must not imagine this as though all activity of the human spirit is suspended thereby. Thinking and understanding is an act that takes place in the human spirit.
Note c. Illumination is the work of the Triune God. Eph. 1:17. 3:8-9. 2 Cor. 4:6. Matt. 11:25.
Father. You have revealed it to babes.
Son. Matt. 11:27: he to whom the Son wills to reveal it. John 1:9: Christ the light that lights everyone. John 12:46. Luke 2:32: a light to lighten the Gentiles.
Spirit. John 14:26: he will teach you all things. 16:13: he will guide you into all truth. [Explanation of the] Third Article.
Note d. God wills to illumine all, but many prevent it.
3. The means of illumination. God works
a. not without means. God gives his Spirit to no one except through the Word. — Fanatics, Zwingli: the Spirit must do it;
b. through the Word, as at creation: God spoke. The Gospel is the means of regeneration, and therefore also of illumination. 1 Pet. 1:23: born again through the living word. James 1:18: begotten through the word. Therefore the Gospel is a bright light. 2 Cor. 4:4. 2 Pet. 1:19.
Note a. There can be no talk here of the effects of the Law. The Law does not illumine.
Note b. If man knows anything of the counsel of God, he has it from Scripture. — Illumination does not go beyond the content and scope of the written Word;
c. through his instruments, especially the preachers. 2 Cor. 4:6: that through us illumination might come about.
Note. Therefore a preacher should
1. be a Christian. Can a blind man lead a blind man? Luke 6:39. — Yet even an unbeliever can illumine the hearts of his hearers, since illumination happens through the Word.
2. ask from above for fitness for this. 2 Cor. 3:5: that we are fit is from God.
4. The continuing illumination.
a. is a constant teaching, reminding, and guiding into the truth;
b. happens by degrees. Various degrees: the strong and the weak in faith. The rich and the poor in knowledge. — Hence, growing in knowledge. Perfection in eternal life.
Note a. God does not give his knowledge all at once, but transfigures from one degree of glory to another. 2 Cor. 3:18. One dose after another. (Third Article: "with his gifts.") Every new item of knowledge, every better understanding, is a new gift. Hymn 183: "and adorns beautifully with gifts."
Note b. There is also a dawning;
c. happens through the Word. An increase of the first little sparks of knowledge. Therefore
1. we should hold to the Word and read the Word diligently,
2. pastors should let slip no opportunity to preach the Word;
d. is necessary for man, partly on account of his great sinfulness (right knowledge would always be subject to the possibility of being clouded and darkened), partly on account of the inexhaustibility of the Word of God. Ps. 92:5: Your thoughts are very deep. Rom. 11:33: Oh, the depth of wisdom! I have yet many things to say to you.
Note. We are to pray for illumination. "Lord, open to us the door of our hearts." Hymn 5, 1.
5. Falling away. People who have been illumined, who really once could see, can become blind again. — Then illumination, too, ceases. For a time, to be sure, a dead knowledge remains, but in the end the one who has fallen away is even blinder than the heathen.
Homiletics.
20th Sunday after Trinity. Epistle. — The illumination of the Holy Spirit. a. That it is necessary, b. how it happens through the Word, c. that it is frustrated by many. — Quart. 2, 267.
2 Cor. 4:6. On illumination. a. On the darkness of the natural heart, b. on the light that God has given us in the heart.
