Anm. Was Stellhorn in früheren Jahren gegen Jowa geſchrieben ſ. L. W. 28, 531. Luth. 38, 139.

8. The Iowa Synod. Although Iowa concedes that man does not in himself have the power to decide for or against salvation, but that this decision is worked wholly and entirely by the Spirit and is altogether a work of grace (Fritschel, Distinguishing Doctrines § 4), they nevertheless make man's decision the explanatory ground in the mystery of conversion. Fritschel, Distinguishing Doctrines 53, 54: that of two people who hear God's Word, one is converted and the other not, has its ground in man's decision.

a. Die Lehre, daß Gott die Entſcheidung
des Menſchen nur ermöglicht und der Menſch

Anm. a.
Anm. b. Dem Menſchen iſt nach dieſer Lehre noch etwas Gutes geblieben. Es fehlen ihm nur die Kräfte, ſich ſo zu entſcheiden, wie er wollte;

9. The Ohio Synod agrees with Iowa.
3. Refutation of the antithesis.
a. The doctrine that God only makes man's decision possible, and that man can decide for himself with the powers granted by God,
1. conflicts with the doctrine of original sin and the total corruption of human nature.
Note a. If there already lie in a man, even before his conversion, powers granted by God with which he can decide, then spiritual life is being ascribed to the natural man.
Note b. According to this doctrine something good has still remained in man. He only lacks the power to decide as he would wish;
2. contradicts the doctrine of conversion, which is a raising from the dead, a new birth, a new creation. Thereby all self-activity and cooperation is excluded.
Note. A dead man is supposed to decide for his own being made alive! Suppose Lazarus had only received the powers and had then had to decide for himself whether he wanted to become alive or not!
3. contradicts the pure passive state in conversion. Konk. 609 § 89; 526 § 18. To...
