Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

1. If man is to come into possession of the goods acquired through Christ, then a decision for Christ and salvation must take place in him. Determinatio voluntatis. This decision is worked a. not by man out of himself, out of his natural powers. 1 Cor. 2:14: The natural man receives nothing of the Spirit of God, and so on. One does not decide for what seems foolishness to him. John 15:5: Without me you can do nothing. Eph. 2:1: dead in sins. Eph. 2:8: not of yourselves. John 15:16: You have not chosen me. Konk. 589: The natural man cannot accept the grace offered to him; 593: cannot give his consent to it. Note. Man can decide only for evil; b. but by God alone. Phil. 2:13: God works to will and to do. Testimony from Dannhauer, Calov. Note a. God not only grants the powers to decide, but works the decision itself; he not only gives powers for conversion, but works the act of conversion itself. God does not merely lead man up to the crossroads. Note b. Man's decision is his conversion. Faith consists precisely in man's deciding for God. Note c. That the apostate turns back is truly his own resolve. It is an unforced decision that takes place in man's will. But it is God who works this resolve. Note d. The decision does not happen by irresistible force. Man can always resist.

2. Antithesis. a. Pelagians. Man can decide for himself out of natural powers. b. Synergists. God only makes the decision possible. He places man at the crossroads, gives him the power to be able to decide, and with the powers granted by God man can then decide for his own conversion. Note a. This sounds quite reasonable! Note b. Some synergists ascribe to natural man still a last remnant of spiritual powers, so that he can decide with the powers granted by God; others say it is all grace when man wills the right thing.

5. places conversion too late. Note a. The granting of spiritual powers is itself conversion. Note b. A person who has already received spiritual powers from God and can decide is already converted. As soon as a dead man receives power, he is alive. Note c. That would be a conversion before conversion; one would have to be converted in order to be able to convert oneself. Note d. It is as if one let children run about for weeks and then finally decide about their own birth. Note e. Converted people, dear children of God, are regarded as unconverted persons who still have to decide. A noose of despair for the troubled in conscience;

Anm. a. 4. Einwände. a. 9. leads to an intermediate state between the converted and the unconverted, and finally to a kind of limbo for all who have not yet decided, even though they are already equipped with spiritual gifts; 10. has evil consequences: one need not utterly despair of oneself. Sole trust in God, the certainty of the state of grace, and the comfort of perseverance to the end are shaken. b. The doctrine that God indeed works man's decision wholly and entirely, but that the decision is the explanatory ground of the mystery in conversion, is 1. unlutheran. What the Lutheran confession declares to be a mystery, 716 § 57, is now resolved, the mystery destroyed; 2. rationalistic. Where God has given no answer, one should not seek to explain anything; 3. synergistic. It reveals the synergism, for the mystery of why, of two people who both hear God's Word, one comes to faith and the other does not, is not explained at all if God alone and entirely works the decision. The mystery would still stand: why does God work the decision in the one and not in the other? An explanation is gained only when the decision is attributed to man's natural powers: the one decided, the other did not. Note a. Synergists decisively deny that the difference, why one is converted before another, lies in the grace of God; so it must lie outside of grace, in man. Note b. In their view this is supposed to involve no merit. But an explanatory ground explains only if it is meritorious. Note c. When they do not compare themselves with those who are perishing, they praise the grace of God; when they do compare themselves with those who are perishing, it is immediately said: the ground lies in me. Note d. Concerning the resolution of this mystery, note further: 1. Either the ground, why one is converted and the other not, lies in God (Calvinism) or in man (synergism). There is no third possibility. 2. God's mercy cannot be the explanatory ground, since it extends to all men. 3. It cannot lie in man's will, since man can decide only for evil. 4. The only thing we can do here is to be silent. 4. Objections. a. To dismiss the question is said to involve the doctrine of absolute predestination. b. If man can not-will, Matt. 23:37, then he can also will. If he can decide against grace, then also for it.
