Collection › Eckhardt's Reallexikon › index › einwohnung
A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.
The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.
Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.
4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR
The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Anm. a. Anm. e. Welche Ehre: Der große Gott in uns! Solches iſt keinem Engel widerfahren. Größere Ehre kann uns nicht zuteil werden. Anm. f.

1. That God wants to dwell in our heart is attested by Scripture in many places. John 14:23: We will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Ezek. 37:27: dwell among them. Eph. 3:17: Christ to dwell in your hearts. 1 Cor. 3:16: Do you not know that you are God's temple? 1 Cor. 6:19: your body a temple of the Holy Spirit. 2 Cor. 6:16: For you are the temple of the living God. Rev. 21:3: a tabernacle of God with men. Note a. Here belong also all the sayings that deal with the sending of the Spirit: Gal. 4:6: God has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts. John 14:26: whom my Father will send. John 15:26. Note b. It is not enough that he loves us, has redeemed us, takes us to heaven; he wants to dwell with us already here. Note c. As a friend who loves another gladly comes to him and visits him, so God does. Note d. The triune God — the Father who created us, the Son who redeemed us, the Holy Spirit who enlightens us — will make his dwelling with us. Note e. What an honor: the great God in us! Nothing like this has happened to any angel. No greater honor can be granted to us. Note f. Such a thing was not even promised to the people in the Old Testament. Note g. By nature we are dwellings of the unclean spirit, since through Adam's fall man ceased to be a temple of God. Original sin. — Therefore Christ came into the world, to make our hearts again a dwelling of God. John 14:23 — not: find dwelling with him, but: make dwelling with him. Redemption.

2. The manner and mode of this indwelling. It consists a. not in the omnipresence of God, according to which he fills all things, b. not in a change of place on God's part, c. not in a personal union of God with man, as with Christ. Of believers one cannot say: they are God. House and inhabitant do not become one; d. not a mere mutual love and affection; e. not a mere being filled with his gifts and powers; f. but a true indwelling, an intimate union of his being with our being, which is 1. spiritual and invisible, 2. supernatural, mysterious, inexplicable.

Note a. God would indeed gladly move into every human being. No one is too lowly. He knocks at everyone's door, but many do not open to him; many drive him out of their hearts again. Note b. The motive for moving into the hearts of men is 1. not our merit. We are not worthy of it, 2. solely his love and grace. He does not need us, but he wants to let us enjoy his blessedness; 3. Christ's merit. 6. Application. a. Comfort. We have our treasure, our glory, our fountain of joy, heaven, within us. Why should I be afraid? Can he be excluded from heaven who has the Lord of heaven within himself? Ps. 23:4: Though I walk, and so on. Isa. 43:2: When you pass through the waters, and so on. Ps. 145:18, 19: The Lord is near, and so on; b. Exhortation. Let us 1. receive him, 2. walk in godliness, since he is with us, 3. not drive him out through willful sins. God departs from the ungodly. A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
