Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

2. Zu wahrer Einigkeit iſt not übereinſtimmung in allen Lehren, in allen Glaubensartikeln. Konk.

2. For true unity, agreement in all doctrines, in all articles of faith, is necessary. Konk. 553: "when in doctrine and all the articles of the same, unity is maintained with one another." 725: "whereby nothing is conceded to the smallest error." Note a. The distinction between fundamental and non-fundamental does not come into consideration here, but only with regard to salvation. Not all doctrines are indispensably necessary for salvation. Note b. Agreement in theological problems does not belong to true unity, for example whether the soul is created by propagation or by infusion, and so forth. Where there is no Word of God, there is no article of faith. Note c. If someone flatly denies clear words of Scripture, for example that Balaam's donkey spoke, unity ceases, because thereby the authority of Scripture is rejected. Note d. We do not demand words that say agreement in all doctrines is present; we demand the agreement itself. — Confession as a mere signboard does not suffice.

3. True unity is not a. hierarchical, where priests and church councils rule and maintain unity. Note a. Where God's Word has commanded nothing, no synod or pastor is to decide. Note b. The idea that a strong church government is necessary to maintain unity is a mixing of the spiritual and the worldly kingdom; b. founded on human laws. We are not enemies of good order, but human laws cannot be the ground of unity; c. constitutional; the church is not held together by its constitution; d. facultative, so that the strongest, the most gifted, is lord, as in the realm of nature. — Matt. 23:11: The greatest among you shall be your servant. e. ecclesiastical-political, where truth and justice are sacrificed to help the church along; f. unionistic, whereby faith and confession are left free to each individual. While Christians believe, think, and are minded differently in their hearts, they unite outwardly. Note a. In doing so one does not consider it worth the trouble to get to the bottom of the truth, and prefers not to go into doctrinal differences that might lead to divisions at all,

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
