Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

That marriage with a sibling-in-law is forbidden follows from a. Lev. 18:6. General rule. My brother's wife is my own flesh. b. Lev. 18:16 and 20:21, where the brother's wife is specifically forbidden besides. c. Lev. 18:17, where marriage with a deceased wife's daughter is forbidden, precisely because she is the wife's flesh. Objections.

1. God commanded marriage with a sibling-in-law in one specific case (the levirate marriage), so it must at least be permitted to Christians. — From a command given in one specific case one cannot always infer a general permission; for example, God commanded in one specific instance that vessels be taken from the Egyptians — so is it now generally permitted?

2. The tribe of Judah was so large that there was no danger of its dying out. Merely for the sake of Christ's descent according to the flesh, God would not have needed to command a "disgraceful act" (Lev. 20:21) — the levirate marriage. — Who has been his counselor?

10. The wife's sister is said to be the best caretaker of her nephews and nieces. — That is not always so, as a stepmother. Note a. That many regard marriage with a sibling-in-law as permitted comes from the fact that they 1. wrongly appeal to Lev. 18:18; 2. do not listen to the lawgiver himself as an infallible authority, 3. hold to secular laws. Note b. The first dispensation from this prohibition occurred in the year 1500, for the King of Portugal. Note c. In England marriage with a sibling-in-law has been permitted for some years. Note d. Luther at first held marriage with a sibling-in-law to be permitted (Mich. 97, 62), but later retracted his opinion. Baier 3, 769. Past. 213. Luth. 6. Anh. 6. Mich. 97, 62. 63. His testimony from the last period: Past. 213. 214. Mich. 97, 61. Syn. Frei. 94. 39. Gerhard's testimony: Wis. 91, 51. Past. 215. Note e. Even if someone were not yet convinced by all these scriptural proofs of the prohibition of marriage with a sibling-in-law, he should still refrain from entering into such a marriage, since what one does in uncertainty and doubt is wrong. 9. The punishments which God placed on forbidden marriages in the Old Testament are a. the death penalty. Lev. 20:11, stepmother; v. 12, daughter-in-law; v. 17, half-sister. b. childlessness. Lev. 20:20, father's brother's wife; v. 21, brother's wife. — God will take them in his hand, so that either they have no children (a harsh punishment in the Old Testament), or children as though they had none — taken away by death, and so forth. Note. In the New Testament this punishment is not infrequently left unexecuted. Here too it would be no punishment for many. — Even the promise of the Fourth Commandment often seems to turn out the opposite. 10. Which of the forbidden marriages, once entered into, are to be dissolved, and which are to be tolerated? a. All incestuous marriages on which God set the death penalty, and which are contrary even to nature, are to be dissolved, or it is to be declared that in such a case no marriage bond exists. 1 Cor. 5, the stepmother.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
