Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

b. by words. Eph. 5:4: filthy words, foolish talking, or jesting, which are not convenient. Adulterers are also those who take pleasure in indecent jests, stories, novels, and songs; c. by caresses, embracing, kissing. Dancing and kissing games. Prov. 5:19: be thou ravished always with the love of another [woman]. By contrast, Isaac and Rebekah. Gen. 26:8. Note. It is already considered improper when engaged couples kiss in public. How much more is morality and decency violated by caresses with others: d. by gestures and looks. Prov. 6:25. Gen. 39:7: cast her eyes upon Joseph. 2 Pet. 2:14: eyes full of adultery. What was the cause that made Potiphar's wife, David, and the two judges at the Susanna story (the history of Susanna and Daniel) into adulterers? Note. Immodest clothing, worn to draw others' eyes to oneself, belongs here as well; e. by desire and the evil lust of the heart. Matt. 5:27-28: whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her. - Thereby every unchaste stirring is condemned. - What good does it do a man that he leaves undone the deed he gladly would have done? Note a. The Sixth Commandment is meant to expose to us the shameful lust of the flesh, which is lodged so deeply in the heart that it can drag even the best of us into vice and shame. Note b. Lust for unchastity, a terrible enemy! Woe to him who does not watch over the stirrings of his heart and wishes to taste even a little from the cup of fleshly lust. Note c. No one is safe from this lust, so that Paul himself exhorts even the godly Timothy: flee youthful lusts. Has lust not yet assailed you? The spark smolders in every heart. Note d. All sexual love, desire, and inclination is to find its fulfillment only within marriage; therefore it is adultery when one seeks the satisfaction of one's desire outside of marriage. Note e. Every evil desire is also always a sin against one's neighbor, who is thereby affected. Note f. The Sixth Commandment condemns us all. We all need repentance and a Savior; f. by omission, when one can prevent sins against this commandment and fails to do so. Note. Therefore parents must watch over their children. Many a child would not have fallen if the parents had done their duty in time. Why stone her at the door of her father's house? Deut. 22:21.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
