Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

2. The works of unchastity a. are grave sins. They are numbered among the most shameful of sins. Gal. 5:19-20. 2 Tim. 3:3. Note a. Every person's own conscience already tells him this. Why do they seek the cover of night? Eph. 5:12: for it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret, etc. Note b. It is the chief sin of youth; b. are incompatible with Christianity. Can someone who lives in such sins still be a Christian? The Holy Spirit flees from the stinking pools of unchaste, fornicating hearts; c. bring temporal ruin as a consequence. 1. reproach and shame. Prov. 6:30-33. 2. the destruction of bodily strength. Sin gnaws at the body like a foul worm, consumes the marrow of one's strength, turns the body into a tree that withers already in blossom, lays waste the cheerful mind, and weakens the memory; d. bring God's wrath upon oneself. Because of these sins the wrath of God comes upon the children of unbelief. - Sodom: e. exclude from heaven. Heb. 13:4: whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Eph. 5:5: no whoremonger, nor unclean person, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ. Prov. 5:5. 7:27. 9:18. Let such a one belong outwardly to the church all he likes, or console himself that God will not be so strict. Note a. What a swamp of unchastity 1. in the time of the Greeks and Romans, 2. in our own time. Sin spreads about to an alarming degree. Konk. 245, § 53. Note b. The causes are unbelief, excess in eating, drinking, and sleeping, by which evil desire is nourished, and bad company. Note c. In cases of gross sins of unchastity, a public confession before the congregation must take place. Note d. In preaching or teaching on the Sixth Commandment, care is needed not to instruct one's hearers in these very sins, telling them of sins they may not yet know. Luther, in explaining the Sixth Commandment, does not spell out what we are not to do. Objection. One should keep silent about this from the pulpit. This is said to cause offense, to violate propriety. - To the impure, all things are impure. Note e. Yet there is still help even for fornicators and adulterers. Repent, rise up from your fall, and you will obtain forgiveness. David. 1 Cor. 6:11.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
