Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

f. regard one another as a gift of God; g. help each other and further each other in reaching the heavenly goal. Teach, admonish, rebuke. If the spouse is spiritually sick, help should be provided in good time. Many a man would not have fallen into evil ways if his wife had done her duty in time: h. give one another trust. No secrets, apart from official secrets and matters of conscience. The Shunammite woman was for a time unable to tell her husband the reason for her journey, 2 Kings 4:23-24, but the husband does not press her; he can rely on her. 2. Particular duties. a. of the husband. He is the head of the wife, and therefore should 1. shield, protect, and defend her, 2. provide for and nourish her. Eph. 5:29: he nourisheth it. 1 Tim. 5:8: provide for his own household. - He can even be compelled to this by the government. Note a. That the husband is the head of the wife does not mean that he may treat her 1. like a maidservant. The wife should not walk behind him like a servant, but at his side; 2. like a tyrant. Sirach 4:30: be not as a lion in thy house. Col. 3:19: be not bitter against them. 1 Pet. 3:7: according to knowledge. One does not strike with the head; one deliberates with it. Note b. The husband should show consideration for the wife's weakness. - How kindly Elkanah treated his wife! 1 Sam. 1:8. Note c. How often men neglect their duties! Instead of love, there are harsh words; instead of providing for the family, the husband goes to the tavern, etc. Note d. Sadder still is it when men begin to strike their wives. Note e. A husband has no right to rule over his wife's faith and conscience. Note f. So that they might rightly fulfill their duties toward their wives, husbands were exempt from military service during the first year of married life: b. of the wife. The wife 1. is the husband's helper. Husband and wife should be like two fellow travelers, each helping the other bear their burdens. In particular, the wife should be a helper in joy. Luth. 58, 26. Note. How valuable is a good friend at one's side. If a person has no one with whom to share his happiness, then the greatest happiness is nothing; 2. is to be subject to him. Gen. 3:16: he shall rule over thee. 1 Tim. 2:12: she is not to have rule over the man. Eph. 5:22: wives, [submit yourselves...]

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
