Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

2. How should one serve God? a. With the whole heart, 1 Sam. 12:20, 24; with the whole soul, Josh. 22:5; honestly, faithfully, Josh. 24:14; with fear, Ps. 2:11; without fear, Luke 1:74; with joy, Ps. 100:2; with all humility, Acts 20:19; b. not merely outwardly, but in the heart, so that all our inclinations and desires are directed toward God, so that we cling to no creature. "If I have only thee." 1 Cor. 7:29-30: those who have wives, as though they had none, etc. Note. We should serve God with heart, mouth, and hands, with every member of the body. Rom. 12:1: to present our bodies a sacrifice is a reasonable service; c. with zeal. How the servants of sin, the servants of mammon, put us to shame in their zeal! Rom. 6:19: even so now yield your members servants to righteousness; d. in every place, in our house, etc. e. in all things. 2 Cor. 6:4; f. at all times. Luke 1:74: all the days of our life. There is no place and no time in which a Christian is exempt from this service. Happy are those who from childhood have labored their whole life long in the service of the Lord: g. according to God's commandment. All self-chosen worship is an abomination to God. See self-chosen works: h. to him alone. Matt. 4:10: thou shalt worship, etc. Matt. 6:24: no man can serve two masters. 1 Kings 18:21: how long halt ye between two opinions? What husband would allow his wife to live to please another man alongside him? Spiritual fornication. True worship tolerates no rival service. First Commandment. Note a. Elements of true worship are 1. according to the first table: to fear God. Sirach 1:16[?]: the fear of the Lord is true worship. To love, trust, pray to, and thank him. Sirach 1:14[?]: whoever honors God's word performs true worship: 2. according to the second table. James 1:27: to visit widows and orphans, etc. Note. We serve God by serving our neighbor. 3. according to both tables. To abstain from sin - that is a divine service pleasing to God. Sirach 35:3. - Nothing but things that every Christian can do in every calling. Note b. Most people grope in the dark about true worship. Note c. No man can serve God by his own reason. We must ask God for the strength to do so. Note d. Examples of servants of God for us can be 1. the angels. Ps. 103:21: his servants. Dan. 7:10: a thousand thousand ministered unto him. Matt. 4:11: and ministered unto him: 2. the blessed in heaven. Rev. 7:15: they serve him day and night; 3. among believers: Josh. 24:15: as for me and my house, etc. David. Acts 13:36: after he had served his own generation by the will of God. Dan. 6:16: thy God, whom thou servest continually, [is able to] deliver thee. Hannah. Luke 2:37: she served God with fastings and prayers night and day. Simeon. Luke 2:29: thy servant. Paul served the Lord with all humility and with many tears and trials. Acts 20:19. Rom. 15:17. 3. How well off such servants are! a. They serve a great, rich, gracious Lord; b. they are blessed in such service - in body and in spirit. They grow in sanctification and knowledge, are freed more and more from sin. Note. James 1:25. "This man shall be blessed in his deed" does not mean he will thereby earn blessedness (he must already be blessed before he can begin to serve God), but that he will count himself fortunate in such service, will rejoice that he can serve God and men; c. their labor in the Lord, their service, will not be in vain, but will bear glorious fruit: d. they can at last, when their evening comes, depart in peace: e. their service is richly rewarded. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant," etc. Where I am, there shall my servant be also. He that soweth in blessing shall also reap in blessing. Note. Of merit, of course, there can be no talk here. It remains a reward of grace. See Labor in the Kingdom of God, § 7. 4. Opposed to true worship are a. the service of sin. How people, before their conversion, serve sin! To serve sin, the drunkard sacrifices his health and his family's happiness, the miser denies himself all refreshment, the thief forgoes sleep. Such service is no burden to them, but a delight. But the end of this service is death. Rom. 6:21; b. the service of mammon. Matt. 6:24: Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Note a. The service of mammon takes place first in the heart, with worry, fretting, striving after earthly things, but then also comes out in the transgression of all the commandments. A story. Luth. 44, 102. Note b. The servant of mammon chooses for himself an idol that is not in itself shameful or harmful; he turns gifts of God into his god. Note c. Service of mammon is foolish, damnable idolatry; its end: ruin and damnation. 1 Tim. 6:9. Note d. Very few servants of mammon recognize their condition; c. the service of the world. James 1:27: to keep oneself unspotted from the world. Whoever serves the lusts of the flesh cannot be God's servant; d. false worship, where one 1. wants to serve God according to one's own judgment, with self-chosen works. Matt. 15:9: in vain they do worship me; 2. is content with a merely external service. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, etc. Such external worship is like a body without a soul, a lantern without light;

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
