Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

...always remain blessed. We find the angels at the last day still as good angels, for example Matt. 24:31. So they remain so also in eternity. Matt. 18:10: their angels in heaven always behold the face of my Father in heaven. To behold the face of God is blessedness. Luke 20:36: they can no longer die. Note a. When this confirmation took place, Scripture does not say. Note b. That the angels remain in blessedness is not implanted in them by nature, but is a grace granted by God. Note c. The angels do indeed also have duties on earth among sinful men, but none of that can tear them out of their heaven. Note d. They see the face of God. What a high privilege it is to see a king face to face! 2 Kings 25:19. Jer. 52:25. Note e. Scripture also calls the angels "elect," 1 Tim. 5:21, but does not go further into this. It stands firm that the good angels are not elect for Christ's sake as men are. It can also mean: the foremost among the angels. L. W. 51, 205. Objection. If the angels can no longer sin, they are no longer morally free. Antithesis. Some Calvinists believe that the angels too needed a savior to confirm them in blessedness. 9. The activities of the angels are a. toward God: 1. praising. Ps. 148:2: Praise him, all his angels. For this they were created. That is their office. — Examples: Luke 2:14: Glory to God ... in the highest. Isa. 6:3: Holy, holy, holy. Note a. How wonderfully the angels must be able to sing! Note b. The purpose (finis) for which God created the angels is, on God's side, his glory; on the angels' side, the enjoyment of heavenly blessedness. 2. serving and carrying out his commands. Ps. 103:20, 21: who do his commandments; his ministers that do his pleasure. Dan. 7:10: thousand thousands ministered unto him. Ps. 104:4: who makes his ministers a flaming fire. Luke 22:43: there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. Matt. 4:11: the angels came and ministered unto him. — Therefore Gabriel himself, when the command had come to him, says, Luke 1:19: and...

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
