Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

38. Slander. We should not slander our neighbor. Ps. 50:16, 19-20: you slander your own mother's son, etc. Sir. 19:6 [likely]: if you hear something evil, do not repeat it. 5:16 [likely different]. How widespread this sin is! There are people whose tongue no one can escape. Kug. 4, 443. Note a. To give someone a bad reputation means to bring him into ill repute by spreading evil rumors. Note b. "Leumund" [reputation] comes from the old word "limmet" [hearsay]. Note c. One brings one's neighbor into ill repute, 1. when one says something untrue about him, cf. Absalom and David, 2 Sam. 15:1-6. [Slander] of Athanasius, Luth. 40, 131-132, 2. when one brings to light something evil that is indeed true but hidden; this is all the worse when he has already repented and made amends, 3. when one denies or belittles the good that one's neighbor has done. "He is a good man, but..." Job 1:9. (Luth. 28, 92), 4. when one ascribes to him wicked intentions and motives. Note d. How candidates are slandered at election time! Note e. What harm is thereby done! 1. His good name is taken from his neighbor. Paul would rather have died than that. 1 Cor. 9:15. 2. Congregations and friendships are torn apart. -- A spark thrown down, what a fire can arise from it! Luth. 62, 292. Note f. The harm cannot be made good again. A sack full of feathers, scattered to the wind, cannot be gathered up again. Note g. A slanderer 1. is a living cesspool, from which evil vapors rise, a stinking mire, 2. lays hands on God's own office of judgment. No judge can inflict a higher punishment than to say, "He is a thief," etc., 3. commits a threefold murder. See page 111, e. R. Pi. 1, 208. Note h. Pastors too should guard themselves against this sin. Note i. But how, if I know that my neighbor has sinned -- should I keep silent about it? -- You should rebuke him as a brother. Objections: a. "But it is true, what I say." -- What good does it do you or your neighbor? Cui bono? See page 11, Objection b. b. "I do not say it to slander him, I want nothing [to gain] by it -- I only want others to [be warned]." Weapons against slanderers. We should

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
