8. Explanation of the words:
a. I am the LORD. I have the right to command you, as your Creator.
b. Your God. Not "your" [plural, i.e. all of you collectively], but yours [singular]. No one should think it does not concern him.
Note. These words are the Gospel in a nutshell. I will take you all to myself. In this, too, lies the resurrection of the dead.
c. Who brought you out of the land of Egypt. This has no meaning for us [directly, historically].
d. "You" [singular], that is:
1. every individual person. Do not look at others; I want to deal with you,
2. the whole person. Your hands shall make no idols, your knees shall not bow before them, etc. -- you, with all the powers of body and soul.
e. "Shall." God does not say, "I do not see it gladly," but: "I simply will not have it."
f. "You shall not" presupposes actually committed sins, and shows that we are transgressors. -- Objection: Adam already had this law in the state of innocence. -- But not in this formulation of words.
g. Other gods. There are no other gods at all, but people make some for themselves.
h. Gods. People seek out for themselves many idols.
i. Have, that is, idolatrously fear, love, and trust in.
k. Besides me, in addition to my person. You shall have no other gods beside me. I will give my honor to no other. Isa. 42:8: you shall worship God, etc. Matt. 4:10.
Note a. In the prohibition lies the command: we should have the true God.
Note b. To have God means: to have him in the heart, Brunn 50; to acknowledge him believingly as our God, R. Pi. 1, 50; to have him as our own possession -- my God, my heart's comfort and my portion. -- The ungodly too know of God, but have no part in him. Brunn 48, 49.
Note c. There is no better exposition than Luther's own explanation.
9. On the content, see the sections: Idolatry, Fear, Love, Trust.
Note a. This First Commandment is the sum of Holy Scripture, the foundation of all the commandments. There is nothing that is not already contained in the First Commandment.
Note b. Commandments of the civil authority forbid outward acts; the First Commandment reaches to the heart.
Note c. Examine yourself accordingly.
Note d. This commandment we cannot
1. exhaust in learning,
2. fulfill. Through the fall into sin we have all become idolaters.
Note e. The First Commandment remains valid even in eternal life.
Note f. Appended to the First Commandment is a special prohibition of images. Exod. 20:4 [likely]: You shall not make yourself a graven image, etc. What is meant are carved idol-images. -- Images as such are otherwise not forbidden; only the worshiping of them is forbidden.
Homiletics, see Idolatry.
