Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

explain it, they cannot after all. Note b. Many scholars, nevertheless, trace the transition from vegetable to animal life back to a special divine act. How difficult it is to decide what is more highly developed, what developed later! Experience teaches that the complex forms frequently appear first, and the simple ones later. The claim that, in pure water, infusoria [microscopic organisms] soon arise is refuted by the proof that the eggs of infusoria are carried through the air.

4. The descent of man from the ape. For how Darwin describes primitive man, see L. W. 17, 209-210. That such a theory is entirely unscientific is proven by the following points: a. There would have to be a whole series or chain of apes, of which each one stood somewhat nearer to man than the next in respect of structure, hair, culture, language, customs, religion. — Only the ape and man are still here. Where are the intermediate links? Extinct!? Note. Why should it have been precisely the ape that stood nearer to man that died out? Because it was not equal to the struggle for existence? If heredity prepared its extinction, then, human as it was, no ape could become a complete human being. b. The ape resembles man far less in inner structure than in outer form. In animals that stand lower than the ape, the inner parts resemble man's far more. c. Human remains and mummies that have been found indicate that man has always been what he is today; they only suggest a greater physical strength and a greater development of the brain. Note. Microcephalics (people with an abnormally small skull) are not a throwback to an earlier stage of development, but a hindrance in development. d. A change of species could only have been brought about by changed living conditions. Could a different climate, different food, have caused the shedding of an animal's pelt? e. Through selective breeding one can produce special breeds of oxen, but no clever oxen. By what manner of life could the ape have acquired culture; through what condition of the soil would the sense of shame have arisen that distinguishes man from all animals? How could it have come to adopt marriage as beneficial? Where

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
