Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

6. The purpose of preservation is the same as that of creation. God preserves the world so that the purpose set at creation may be achieved. God preserves a. the world, so that everything in the world may serve man, that food may bring him joy, that flowers may delight his eyes, and so on; b. man, so that he may be converted and led to salvation. Acts 17:27: that they should seek the Lord. Rom. 2:4: the goodness of God should lead to repentance. Luke 13:8: whether it might bear fruit. He does not want anyone to be lost. If this goal is not reached, man has lived in vain. Note a. For the sake of Christians and of those who are yet to be converted, God still lets the world stand. Once this goal is reached, the end follows. The world stands not one moment longer. Note b. The purpose on God's side is the glory of God. Eph. 1:11, 12: that we should be to the praise of his glory. Rom. 11:36: to him are all things. All men should recognize him as the highest good. Ps. 104:24: O Lord, how great are your works! From preservation shine forth all the attributes of God, especially his wisdom, omnipotence, and goodness. The earth is full of his goodness.

7. Anwendung

7. Anwendung. Weil Gott uns erhalten will, ſo ſollen wir a. nicht ſorgen. 1 Petr. 5, 7.

7. Application. Because God wants to preserve us, we should a. not be anxious. 1 Pet. 5:7: He cares for you. If we always rightly considered who wants to care for us, we would never worry and would not sit in grief and tears. Nor would there be any insurance companies; b. be content. Were we so, there would be no nihilism and no communism; c. trust him. Ps. 37:5: Commit your way unto the Lord. Hymn 363:3: God, who feeds the birds, will also nourish my body. 348:5: trust him firmly, cast ourselves wholly upon him. — I shall not want; d. give thanks to God. Give thanks to the Lord. Christ gave thanks not only for great benefits, John 11:41, but also for the five loaves, Matt. 14:19. How ungrateful we are; e. praise him; f. serve and obey him. — Since everything comes from him, everything belongs to him. Ps. 116:12: What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits?

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
