Anm. a. ſoll man pflegen. Anm. d. Manchmal iſt „Ehrgefühl“ nichts als Ehr— geiz.

Sense of honor. Sense of honor is the impulse to preserve one's own merits in the eyes of others and to do nothing by which one's honor would be destroyed. Note a. Toward God, the sense of honor has, after the fall into sin, no justification at all, since there is nothing good in us. Note b. The right sense of honor comes when one recognizes how highly one is honored by God — that through faith one has become a lord and free from the bondage of sin. Then one will forfeit nothing of one's Christian dignity and do nothing that disgraces God. — A Christian is endowed with a dignity that nothing on earth equals. Note c. Sense of honor 1. is something pleasing to God and belongs under the Fourth Petition; 2. should be presupposed in every child and used as a means of upbringing; 3. should be injured in no one. God, too, covers over much in us that could bring us into contempt among men; 4. should be cultivated. Great wisdom and caution are needed here, however. The cultivation of the sense of honor in children and youth consists in leaving it as much as possible undisturbed. Note d. Sometimes "sense of honor" is nothing but ambition.
