Namen.
2. Sein Name iſt Jeſus Chriſtus. 1 Tim. 2, 5: nämlich der Menſch Jeſus Chriſtus. Phil. 2, 5: geſinnt. wie Jeſus Chriſtus.
Anm. a.
3. Jeſus. Dieſer ihm von Gott gegebene Nanie
a. bedeutet Heiland, Seligmacher. Matth. 1. 21:
b. kommt ihm zu mit Recht. Er iſt das, was ſein Name ſagt. Wir legen unſern Kindern oft Namen be—
hard. Wit. 90, 31:
d. wird ihm genommen durch jede Lehre, welche Men— ſchenwerke in Bezug auf Erlangung der Seligkeit ver— kündigt;
e. ſoll nicht gemißßbraucht werden.
Anm. a.

Names.
2. His name is Jesus Christ. 1 Tim. 2:5: namely, the man Christ Jesus. Phil. 2:5: be of the same mind as Christ Jesus.
Note a. As a distinction between the two names it is stated that Jesus is the personal name, Christ the official name. Yet this distinction cannot be carried through so strictly, since the name Jesus too, in its meaning, reaches into Christ's office.
Note b. The name Jesus is of Hebrew origin, the name Christ of Greek origin. He is the Savior of Jews and Gentiles.
3. Jesus. This name, given to him by God,
a. means Savior, Deliverer. Matt. 1:21;
b. belongs to him rightly. He is what his name says. We often give our children names, and they develop into something quite other than what the name says;
c. is exceedingly comforting for us. Meditation by Gerhard. Wit. 90, 31;
d. is taken from him by every doctrine that proclaims human works in respect to the attainment of salvation;
e. should not be misused.
Note a. The name Jesus should be for us a reminder of our sin and a constant remembrance of the faith that whoever wants to be saved must be saved through Christ.
Note b. In the Old Testament, too, men were sometimes called saviors, Othniel. Judg. 3:9. Ehud. 3:15. because they freed the children of Israel from the rule of their enemies. They were types of Christ.
The Jews' objection. Isaiah 7:14 says: they shall call him Immanuel. Therefore Christ cannot be the true Messiah. The prophets wanted, by such names, only to describe his person and his office and work.
Note c. What matters above all is that we can say: My Jesus. When a Christian says: My Jesus, he thereby declares that Christ has saved him.
4. Christ.
Mezger 117. R. Pi. Kat. Vol. 1. Part 3, 8.9. Neb. 1901, 28.29. L. W. 24, 307. O. 1903, 40. Can. 91, 37. Luth. 54, 92. Dietr. 212. Stock. 213.
Christ is called our Redeemer by the angel, Luke 2:11: which is Christ; further Dan. 9:25.26: unto Christ.
This name comes from chrio and means Anointed One. Ps. 2:2: against the Lord and against his Anointed.
Note a. In the Old Testament priests and kings were anointed. 1 Kings 19:15.16. Exod. 29:7.
Note b. Christ was anointed with the Holy Spirit. Isa. 11:2: upon whom the Spirit of the Lord shall rest. Acts 10:38: anointed with the Holy Spirit. Ps. 45:7: with the oil of gladness.
Note c. The anointing is the impartation of the divine nature and majesty to the human nature at Christ's conception.
Note d. Christ was anointed as King, High Priest, and Prophet. — Luther: as King and High Priest. He includes the prophetic office within the high-priestly.
5. Messiah was the proper name for the promised Savior after the Babylonian captivity and likewise means Anointed One. John 1:41: We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, the Anointed. 4:25: I know that Messiah comes.
Note. For other names of Christ from Scripture see Schulb. 19, 11.
