Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

...laws are not in themselves against God's holiness, and are binding only because of circumstances that have arisen. Cain could take land wherever he wished. Today that would be theft. Antithesis. Papists. - These prohibitions are said to be ceremonial law. b. These prohibitions do not refer only to the persons named, but to all persons of the same degree. This follows 1. from the general rule. - Similarly, the Tenth Commandment says: wife, servants, or cattle, or anything that is his. Only here the general rule stands at the end; 2. from the equality of the reason. Where the reason is the same, there the law is the same. If not all persons in the same degree were forbidden, then the ground of the prohibition could not be the kinship; 3. from the absurdity that would otherwise follow, since one could then marry all those not named: father, stepmother, brother's daughter, etc., 4. from Deut. 27:23, where the mother-in-law is forbidden, who is not named in Lev. 18. Therefore, an omission in Lev. 18 is no license. Note a. In Lev. 18 the man is addressed. So the law must now, in every case, also be applied to the woman, e.g. the father's sister: the mother's brother. - Yet it must be noted here that not merely the degree, but also the underlying reason, must fit. Note b. Luther at first reckoned not by degrees but by persons, but retracted this again after a few years. Note c. It is similar with the Ninth Commandment: thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife. - Here too the application must be made to the woman: not to covet thy neighbor's husband. [Genealogical chart illustrating the lines of kinship discussed above:] Terah - Nahor - Haran - Abraham (married Sarah) - Bethuel - Lot - Isaac - Laban - Rebekah - Rachel

2. There are two kinds of kinship: consanguinity, blood relationship through natural descent, and affinity, through marital union. The blood relatives of the one spouse are the affines of the other. Note a. Affinity through marriage can arise through the mediation of 1. one person, one marriage: Nahor and Sarah. A man's siblings in relation to his spouse; 2. two persons, two marriages: Keturah, Abraham's wife after Sarah's death, and Sarah's blood relatives. The second spouse of a person, in relation to the blood relatives of the first; 3. three persons and three marriages. If Keturah, after Abraham's death, had married another man, she would have stood in such a relation with Sarah's blood relatives. Note b. Affinity of the second and third class does not come into consideration in the marriage prohibitions.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
