Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

—must be Bible reading. We should raise our children to read the Bible. Note a. In order to keep the children's attention alert, questioning them on what has been read is to be recommended. Note b. The children, too, should read the Bible themselves, so that from childhood on they know the Scriptures. Objection. The Bible is too difficult to be understood by children. — By this principle the mother would not need to speak with the child at all in its first year. Note c. What can parents and teachers do so that the Bible becomes the children's most beloved book? First of all, parents and teachers must go before them with a good example. So long as parents and teachers do not know what they have in the Bible, the children too will care nothing for it. — Further, it belongs to this that they tell the children the biblical stories, diligently hold them to church attendance, etc.; c. in school. We should also take care to provide Christian education in school.

9. Bible reading in parochial schools. Essays. Bible reading in school. Schulb. 9, 129-136. The Bible as the principal textbook. Schulb. 9, 257-268. Theses on Bible reading in the Lutheran parochial school. Schulb. 22, 27. a. All religious instruction in school rests on God's Word. Therefore Bible reading in school is self-evident. The Bible must be the principal schoolbook and must be read diligently. Note a. It is a serious lapse when, amid all the German and English, indeed even amid all the catechism and Bible history, one never gets to Bible reading. Note b. Regular Bible reading in school is worth more than merely a serious exhortation to confirmands to read the Bible. b. Historical. In the Middle Ages Bible reading was excluded from school for want of Bibles. In Luther's time the Bible was also introduced into the school, but since the 17th century its use there has again fallen off. c. Purpose and benefit of Bible reading in school: 1. The power inherent in the Bible proves itself also in the children. 2. The children come to the conviction that our faith is founded on God's Word alone. 3. The children become at home in the Bible, come to love it. 4. The children need striking examples for religious instruction, vivid pictures of life. What value the Bible has as a history book! 5. Bible reading also advances the children linguistically — acquisition of the glorious language of the Bible.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
