Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Note a. Timothy was circumcised by Paul, Acts 16:1–3, not in order to fulfill the Law, but to make his ministry among the Jews easier and for the sake of the weak. Titus, on the other hand, was not circumcised, Gal. 2:1–5, because certain false teachers wanted to force circumcision upon them. Note b. Baptism has taken the place of circumcision. Col. 2:11. Note c. The Jews still practice circumcision today. For the customs they observe in this, see Stock, § 10. 4. The circumcision of Christ. Christ, being the Holy One, had no need to be circumcised. He did it for us, in order to fulfill the Law in our place. Just as he fulfilled this, so afterward he perfectly fulfilled all the commandments. Stöckh. N. T. 13. Note a. To the natural man the circumcision of Christ is foolishness, but to the Christian an adorable wonder: the very one at whose birth all the angels rejoice lets himself be circumcised! What [illegible]... Note b. The circumcision of Christ falls fittingly on New Year's Day. In the circumcision we find what we seek on New Year's Day: comfort. The darkness of the one is illuminated by the comfort of the other. 5. Spiritual circumcision is indispensably necessary for salvation. No uncircumcised person will reign in the holy city of Jerusalem. Isa. 52:1: Therefore circumcise yourselves to the Lord and put away the foreskin of your heart. Jer. 4:4. Deut. 10:16. A circumcision without hands. Col. 2:11. Note. Without spiritual circumcision the bodily circumcision was in vain. Acts 7:51: You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears. (They followed the evil inclinations of the heart and did not want to hear the Lord.) Homiletics. New Year. Gospel. The high significance of the circumcision of Christ is the good foundation of our hope and our comfort at New Year. We want a. to come to know the significance of the circumcision of Christ, b. to consider how it is a good foundation of our hope and our comfort at New Year. — Ma. 14. The circumcision of Christ is a summons to all Christians to step into the new year joyfully and confidently. a. Christ has taken the greatest distress from our shoulders. b. now he will also lend his aid in lesser troubles. — What significance the circumcision of Christ has for us at the threshold of a new year. It is for us a. a memorial of our sin-debt, b. a proclamation of grace, and c. a pledge of our sanctification. — Ma. 235. 23. That in the history of the circumcision of Christ there lies for us believers an urgent summons to begin every new year with joy. In the circumcision lies the assurance a. that with the old year their old sins have vanished, b. that with the new year new grace has dawned upon them. — Walth.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
