3. The means of the calling is the preaching of the gospel of the great deeds of God. It makes no difference here whether this Word comes to a person through preaching in church, or in school, or through reading the Bible at home, or through memorized verses. See Conversion, § 6. In the Christian church everything takes shape as a call of grace.
Note a. Sometimes a friendly word reminds us again of our earlier calling.
Note b. It lies in the nature of the gospel that it invites to faith in Christ.
Note c. The instruments of the calling are preachers and teachers.

Kon. 710. „kein Spiegelfechten.“

Objection 2. The Word has not penetrated to many peoples of our century. — We cannot fathom all of God's hidden ways, but we know that God is just. That among many peoples today God's Word is no longer preached is a well-deserved punishment for their contempt of the Word. Luth. 43, 88. 89. Kon. 716.
Objection 3. Matt. 10:5: Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not. — This prohibition held only for a short time. The Word was to be proclaimed to the Jews first.
Objection 4. Matt. 11:21: If the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented. — The means of repentance were not withheld from them. Christ himself went into the region of Tyre and Sidon. Paul was there seven days. Acts 21:3, 4.
Objection 5. Acts 16:6, 7. Paul and Silas were hindered by the Spirit from preaching the Word in Asia and Bithynia. "Were forbidden," "the Spirit suffered them not." — Yet Peter writes, 1 Pet. 1:1, to the elect strangers in Asia and Bithynia, and sends, 1 Cor. 16:19, greetings in the name of the church in Asia.
b. earnest. Ezek. 33:11: As I live. — Should God become angry at those who despise the call, if he himself did not earnestly will their conversion? Kon. 710: "no sham fighting."
Note. It is not an unreliable person who calls, but God.
Objection. God sometimes hardens people. — He does this only after they have hardened themselves. See Hardening.
Counter-position. Calvin. The Reformed. Presbyterians. Congregationalists, Baptists. God is in earnest only with the elect. The others he calls only outwardly, for show. — But then God would be at odds with himself. Kon. 710;
c. effectual. In calling men, God at the same time gives them the power to follow the call. Example: Lazarus.
Note. By nature man cannot follow the call of God, no more than a dead man can accept an invitation. Original sin.
Counter-position. That man has the power to follow the call, to decide by his own choice. — That all synergism is excluded in the calling, see L. W. 43, 263–268;
d. resistible. God does not compel man. Man can refuse the invitation. See Conversion, §§ 9, 10.
Note a. Man cannot prevent himself from being struck by God's Word.
Note b. God makes us willing to follow the call. He entices and draws: Come.
Objection. Who can resist his will? Rom. 9:19. — Here Scripture is not speaking of the workings of grace through the gospel;
e. repeated. Ordinarily God does not call once, but calls often and again and again. Matt. 23:37: How often! Has he not also called us often, from childhood on?

6. Success. The success of this calling varies:
a. Many follow the call. John 10:16: they will hear my voice.
Note a. This happens through the power and working of the Spirit.
Note b. This then also shows itself outwardly through one's conduct: new tongues, love, and so forth.
b. Many despise the call, in that they
1. follow only outwardly. Matt. 22:12: Friend, how did you come in here? Matt. 20:12. The reward-seeking laborers in the vineyard. Work-righteous people. Hypocrites;
2. do not even follow outwardly. Matt. 22:3: They would not come. 23:37: You would not. Luke 14:18: they began, all alike, to make excuses. They remain standing idle in the marketplace.
Note a. How varied their excuses are! How worthless! Mag. 1, 94. Ma. 29, 215.

a. a sacrament. Baier 423, 424;
b. instituted by God. Gen. 17:9–14. Lev. 12:3;
c. bound up with the giving of a name;
d. a despised act, a mockery to the Gentiles. It took place
e. on all male children. Stock, § 4;
Note a. Why only the boys? In the Old Testament, attention is given in many places only to the male line, for example in the genealogies. The female line recedes into the background.
Note b. Why circumcision of the foreskin? Probably not because much unchastity is committed with this member, but in order to remind us of original sin and uncleanness. "Begotten of sinful seed."
f. on the 8th day, even on the Sabbath. John 7:22;
g. with stone knives. Josh. 5:2;
h. ordinarily by the levitical priests, exceptionally also by women. Ex. 4:25. Zipporah. 1 Macc. 1:63. 2 Macc. 6:10;
i. not during the wandering in the wilderness. Josh. 5:2.
k. Even heathen peoples had circumcision.
2. The purpose and intent of circumcision was
a. a reminder of sinfulness,
b. admission into the covenant of grace,
c. the impartation of forgiveness. Your God. Gen. 17:7.
d. a seal of righteousness and salvation. Rom. 4,
e. separation from other peoples,
f. an obligation to keep the whole law.
Note a. The motive for the institution of circumcision was God's goodness and Christ's merit.
Note b. Between the Old and New Testament sacraments there is no essential difference. The Old Testament sacraments proclaimed Christ as one to come, the New Testament ones as one who has appeared.
Note c. Whatever male child was not circumcised was to be cut off. God wanted to kill Moses because he had not circumcised his son. Ex. 4:24.
Counter-position. Hofmann, Luthardt, and others deny the benefit of circumcision for those circumcised.
3. Circumcision is abolished through Christ. Gal. 5:2: If you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.
