Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

ſchlagen. Anm. a.

[continuing: ...proposed by the president.] Note a. How much indeed depends upon finding the right person! What a blessing is a faithful pastor! What harm another can cause! Note b. One should not call into the blue, not call someone away arbitrarily, frivolously, selfishly, when one knows that great harm will thereby come to his congregation. Note c. Especially traveling preachers and missionaries should not be recalled so quickly from their posts, since the mission suffers thereby. Note d. A restriction, that only pastors from our synod should be called, should not be made. Note e. Women are not eligible to be called. 1 Cor. 14:34: Let your women keep silence in the churches. 1 Tim. 3:2: The bishop must be the husband of one wife. Note f. If no orthodox preacher is to be had, then in case of necessity a congregation may also choose one from its own midst who is competent for it. — Yet the way of the Mennonites, who do not even train pastors, is to be rejected.

15. Präſes zu Rate ziehen

Kon. 331. Anm. a. Dieſe Ordnung iſt auch in unſrer Synode —0 Gemeinden anempfohlen worden. Synodalhand⸗ uch. Anm. b.

15. Consulting the president. It is advisable, when calling a pastor, to consult the president or other officers of the synod, or neighboring pastors. So it happened a. at the election of Matthias, where the apostles did not stand mute in the corner. — Titus only gave counsel when he appointed elders in the cities; b. at the time of the Council of Nicaea. Kon. 331. Note a. This arrangement has also been recommended to the congregations in our synod. Synodical handbook. Note b. Humility, wisdom, and regard for the whole church should move us to this. Note c. One should seek counsel from them not because they alone are wise, but because they sometimes know both pastor and congregation. Note d. Consequences that the neglect of this good counsel sometimes brings about are: 1. Positions are changed more often, because pastors do not come to the right place. 2. The mission work suffers thereby. 3. Faithful pastors do not get positions corresponding to their gifts. Note e. Yet one may not make the consulting of officers obligatory.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
