Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Anm. a. Verleugnen iſt eine Sünde gegen das erſte Gebot (Menſchen mehr fürchten als Gott) und wird ſchwer beſtraft. „Den will ich auch verleugnen.“ Matth. 10, 33. Lied 267, 2. Anm. b. Doch treten auch heute noch immer heimliche Jünger mit ihrem Bekenntnis hervor, von denen man es am wenigſten erwartet hätte. Joſeph von Ari— mathia.

10. How sad the state of confession is! a. Many are ashamed of Christ and his disciples. Walth. Trak. 16: b. many are silent where they should speak. 1 Kön. 18, 21: The people answered nothing; c. many do not come forward freely with their faith. Hymn 175, 4. Nicodemus. John 12:42. 43: for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it. They loved the praise of men more than the praise of God: d. many fall away in the time of tribulation. 2 Tim. 4:16: They all forsook me. — The disciples all fled; e. many give the lie to their confession by their conduct. That is exactly as if a German soldier wore a French uniform. Note a. Denial is a sin against the First Commandment (fearing men more than God) and is severely punished. "Him will I also deny." Matth. 10:33. Hymn 267, 2. Note b. Yet even today secret disciples still step forward with their confession, from whom one would have least expected it. Joseph of Arimathea.

11. Was wir davon ernten. Da der Teufel und die Welt das Bekenntnis von Chriſto nicht leiden können, ſo müſſen die Bekenner oft viel Schmach tragen. Matth. 10, 22: Ihr werdet gehaßt werden von jedermann. Joh. 15, 19: Darum haſſet euch die Welt. Matth. 5. 11. verfolgen, reden allerlei übels wider euch. — ſchmähen, „Sie ſind voll ſüßen Weins.“ Lotterbube. 11. What we harvest from this. Since the devil and the world cannot bear the confession of Christ, confessors must often bear much reproach. Matth. 10:22: You will be hated by everyone. John 15:19: Therefore the world hates you. Matth. 5:11: they will persecute you, revile you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely. — "They are full of sweet wine." Rogue. Slander, suspicion, reproaches — that we are unloving, narrow-minded, opinionated. — They will put you out of the synagogue. Note a. Examples: All the apostles killed except John. John the Baptist. Persecutions of Christians. Luther. The bull of excommunication. The imperial ban. Huguenots. Waldensians. Note b. We now have no persecution, but precious religious freedom; yet every earnest Christian and preacher still experiences the world's mockery and hatred. Note c. That so many Christians do not experience the world's hatred is not because the world has become more godly, but because Christians no longer confess: such Christians the world loves. Note d. If all men were true Christians,

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
