Veichtrede. Abhandlungen. einer guten Beichtrede. Ma. 11, 345. Beichtreden. L. W. 20, 207. Wis. 85, 62. 2. 11, Anm. a. Glauben, Evangelium. Abendmahl, Selbſtprüfung handeln.

Confessional address (Beichtrede). Treatises. On a good confessional address. Ma. 11, 345. Confessional addresses. L. W. 20, 207. Wis. 85, 62. The purpose of the confessional address is to prepare the penitents for a worthy reception of the Lord's Supper. It is the last opportunity to entice them to true repentance and faith and to warn them against unworthy reception of the Lord's Supper. 2. The content of the confessional address must therefore be: a. Law, that the penitents come to a right knowledge of sin; b. Gospel, that they thereby be rightly drawn to faith — this is the main part of the address. Note a. Since the confessional address is to prepare for the Lord's Supper, this is the proper place to speak of its high benefit. Note b. As a third part there may further be added an exhortation to sanctification and amendment of life. 3. One must, however, guard against: a. punishing only the gross sins. Otherwise people might think: Thank God, I am not that bad; b. setting too high a demand 1. as regards the measure of faith, so that frightened hearts do not lose courage to lay hold of grace. The smallest spark of faith is faith; 2. as regards contrition. David drenched his bed with tears; other saints did not. — Nor may one speak as though absolution were grounded on contrition; c. merely describing states of the heart, instead of seeking through the confessional address to work contrition and faith. 1. In order to be able to give suitable confessional addresses, the pastor must a. know his confessional children well. b. prepare himself well for the address. Note. Suitable as texts for confessional addresses are passages that deal with Law, sin, repentance, faith, Gospel, the Lord's Supper, and self-examination.
