Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Reception [into Membership]. Treatises. Wis. 83, 28—35. Ka. 1901, 36. 37. 97, 74. Süd 91, 17—24. 97, 68. Trak. [Tract.] Walther. On the duty of Christians to attach themselves as members to an orthodox local congregation. Outline. Reception into membership § 2. Reception as a voting member § 3. Reception is the congregation's business § 4. Unanimous § 4. Whom to receive? § 5. Not to demand too much § 6. Not too carelessly § 7. Individual cases § 8. Those coming from sister congregations § 9. Those coming from heterodox congregations § 10. 1. A distinction must be made between reception into the membership of the congregation and reception as a voting member of the congregation. 2. Reception into the membership of the congregation takes place through the sacraments: a. through baptism. Acts 2:41: were baptized and were added [to the church]. — Therefore it is not a matter of indifference where one is baptized; b. through the Lord's Supper. Whoever is admitted to the Lord's Supper thereby enters into the membership of the congregation. Note a. In such cases the pastor, who receives the persons concerned into the membership of the congregation, acts in the name of the congregation and is answerable to it. Note b. Children baptized elsewhere become members of the congregation through their parents' joining. 3. Reception as a voting member of the congregation includes not only recognition as a brother, but also the grant of voting rights. Note a. The exercise of voting rights belongs only to adult male members of the congregation. 1 Cor. 14:34, 35: let your women keep silence in the congregations. Note b. Every person who exercises voting rights in the congregation must be a member of the congregation, but not every member of the congregation or communicant member must necessarily possess voting rights. There are persons who are either not capable, or too weak in knowledge, to take part in the governance of the congregation. Note c. One should apply for voting rights. This was already so in apostolic times. 3 John 9, 10. Note d. The signing of the constitution is a human ordinance. Note e. One should not demand an entrance fee. Where it is an established custom, one may accommodate oneself to it, since one already finds church and school in place. 4. Reception into the congregation a. is the business of the congregation. It is not the pastor's place to receive new members. In 3 John 8–10 the apostle rebukes Diotrephes for deciding alone about reception. Note. Christians are to refuse brotherhood to non-Christians and the heterodox; therefore they must exercise the right of judging about reception; b. must take place unanimously, for everyone is to recognize the one received as a brother, and everyone is to guard against brotherhood with open non-Christians. Note a. How sad it would be, if one had to recognize open non-Christians as brothers merely because a majority voted for it! Note b. A protest against a reception must 1. be grounded on false doctrine or an ungodly life; 2. be proved by witnesses. What one knows secretly counts for nothing.

Anm. g. So unrecht es iſt, offenbare Unchriſten aufzunehmen, ſo großes Unrecht iſt es, rechtſchaffene Chriſten abzuweiſen.

5. Whom one should receive: a. only those who are of one faith with us. Ka. Note a. To those who persistently cling to false doctrine we must refuse brotherhood. 2 John 10, 11: if anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, etc. Rom. 16:17: avoid them. Note b. This is what is rebuked in the congregation at Pergamos, that they tolerated those who held the doctrine of Balaam and of the Nicolaitans. Rev. 2:6, 15. Note c. It is a dreadful thing to say: We are indeed to accept God's Word, but you are excused from it among us. Note d. Through the reception of the heterodox into the congregation, God's kingdom is destroyed. What confusion arose when false brothers had crept in among the congregation in Galatia! Gal. 2:4, 5. Objection 1. Bear with one another. — The apostle says this to those who are already of one faith. Objection 2. Be diligent to keep the unity. — The congregation destroys unity by receiving the heterodox. Objection 3. You are pronouncing the ban over Christians. — We are merely declaring that they are not of one faith with us. Note e. Whoever wishes to be received by us, 1. thereby binds himself to our Lutheran confessional writings; 2. must also be in earnest about the Lutheran confession; 3. must not be ashamed of the Lutheran name. To deny the name of the true church is to deny Christ; b. only such as one can, in love, assume to be Christians. Note a. It is true that only Christians belong in the congregation, but we cannot see into anyone's heart. We must go by a person's words and works. Note b. One must consider to be a Christian the one who, besides confessing the pure doctrine, leads a godly life. Note c. Whoever, according to 1 Cor. 5:9–13, ought to be put under the ban, cannot be received. Note d. If one cannot prove open works of the flesh against someone, then reception cannot be denied him. Objection: The congregation is a mission institution. — Yes, but outwardly, toward the world, not inwardly, toward its own members. Note e. That we insist, at reception, on pure doctrine and a godly life, is in agreement 1. with God's Word; 2. with the apostolic church; 3. with the Lutheran church of Luther's time. Luther desired a confession to the Augsburg Confession and the Catechism. Yet he could not arrange the congregations as he would have liked, but had to take account of the conditions of that time. Note f. This belongs among the marks of a well-founded congregation. Note g. As wrong as it is to receive open non-Christians, just as great a wrong is it to turn away upright Christians.

6. Bei der Aufnahme fordere man nicht zu viel: a. nicht ein beſonderes Maß der Erkenntnis. Der Kerkermeiſter und mancher unter den 3,000 am Pfingſttag wird geringe Kenntnis gehabt haben. 6. At reception, one should not demand too much: a. not a special measure of knowledge. The jailer and many among the 3,000 on the day of Pentecost will have had little knowledge. Whoever can examine himself and knows the truths of the Catechism can be received. Note a. In the first centuries, those to be received were first catechized; Note b. Should everyone who wishes to be received first receive special catechism instruction? — This is indeed not wrong, but would frighten off many: b. not a special measure of holiness. Even the apostolic congregations still had many weaknesses. Note a. To those who have repented of their former vicious life, reception should not be refused. The man guilty of incest. 2 Cor. 2:6–8. David. Peter. Saul [Paul]. Such people often become the best members. Whomever Christ receives, we too must receive. Note b. The world mocks: 'This congregation takes in sinners.' But we seek that which was lost and rejoice when we find it. c. not the possession of earthly goods. No one should be refused reception on account of poverty. Note a. The conditions of reception are that the one to be received 1. is baptized and confirmed. Wis. 83, 20; 2. knows at least the Small Catechism and the Augsburg Confession; 3. wishes to be a member of the Lutheran Church; 4. leads a Christian walk of life. Note b. If a congregation comes to recognize that it has proceeded too strictly in reception, it does well to take a step back.

7. In receiving members of the congregation, one should likewise proceed not too carelessly, but cautiously. Otherwise it can easily come about that Christians are governed by non-Christians. Note a. Some join merely for the sake of earthly advantages. Note b. Some congregations are eager to become large and to receive everyone, especially people who pay well. Note c. Some who know of the sins of the one to be received prefer not to make an enemy of him. He would rather become a partaker in another's sins. Note d. [text partially illegible] ...reports to the pastor (and the elders); 2. that the pastor holds an examination with him, if the one to be received is not sufficiently known; 3. that the elder acquaints him with the congregation's constitution; 4. that the name of the one to be received is announced when the meeting is announced, so that any obstacles may be removed; 5. that an address is given to the one being received at the meeting.

8. Individual cases. a. Women are likewise to be received into the congregation; otherwise, if they commit gross sins, they could not be excluded. b. Excommunicated persons. People who have been lawfully banned in other congregations may not be received as long as they remain under that ban. Example: Marcion. Luth. 38, 95. The penitent are to be received again. Note a. The excommunicated, if they were also quarrelsome, should also promise from now on to remain modest and humble. Note b. Those unlawfully banned should be received. c. Drunkards. Drunkenness is not a sin of weakness. Once such people have been received, it is often hard to get them out again. Note. Give them a period of probation. d. In the case of people about whom an evil rumor is going around, it is better to postpone their reception until the matter has been investigated. e. Lodge members. Whoever is so weak in understanding that he does not perceive the sinfulness of the lodge shall have no vote. f. A Christian congregation cannot receive people who belong to unchristian societies or labor unions that plainly have sinful aims.

9. People coming from neighboring sister congregations should not be received if 1. they come for empty, carnal reasons, for that would only strengthen obstinacy and defiance; 2. they come against the will of their congregation, and without their matter having been investigated. Note a. Here the utmost caution is necessary, so that the relationship of faith and brotherhood between the congregations is not disturbed. Note b. If the reasons for which a letter of release is refused appear dishonest, one should follow the orderly process. Note c. Cases may occur where, through disputes between a pastor and a member, the member's trust in his pastor has been lost through the pastor's own fault, and it is better for the pastor to release such a member to a sister congregation. Note e. All who come from sister congregations should bring a letter of release. 10. People who come to us from congregations of false faith: a. If they come because of false doctrine or the ungodly conduct of their pastor, or if they are burdened against their conscience by tyrannical pastors, we receive them. Note a. Yet they should 1. be instructed in the pure doctrine, and 2. renounce their previous false doctrine. Note b. Those who come over from the papacy or from Judaism may make their confession in the public worship service, though it may also take place in the congregational meeting. b. If they come on account of ceremonies, matters of indifference, or the pastor's shortcomings, they should likewise be brought to the recognition that it is wrong to separate from the congregation for the sake of such things. c. If they come in order to escape the discipline of their own congregation, they are to be turned away until they repent. Note a. Before receiving people from congregations of a different faith, one must therefore examine the sincerity of their intent. Objection. If we do not receive them, they will become wholly estranged from the church.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
