A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri
Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at
St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses,
and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by
volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's
own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation
below is a link to that page.
Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set
them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them —
Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds
Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.
4,478 entries
under 828 headwords, carrying
129,203 citations and
2,331 fragments too damaged to read
· built 2026-09-16.
uncorrected OCR
The German below is machine transcription of
the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read
against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a
garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

1. Meaning of the word. The word 'to rise' is used in Scripture in different senses:
a. metonymically. John 11:25: I am the resurrection;
b. of the spiritual resurrection, that is, of instruction. Eph. 5:14: rise from the dead. Col. 2:12 ... sets forth a fall and a rising. Luke 2:34.
c. metaphorically. Deliverance from great distress. Ps. 5.
d. in the proper sense, of the resurrection of the flesh on the Last Day.
Note. Only of a resurrection of the flesh can there be talk; the soul does not fall down and does not die.

— Doch
beruht dieſer Schluß auf Vorausſetzungen, welche

3. Reason and the resurrection. The doctrine of the resurrection cannot be grasped by reason. Acts 17:32: they mocked it. 26:24: you are raving mad. Luke 24:11: an idle tale. John 20:25: unless — I will not believe it. The resurrection is above all reason.
Note a. That man has an immortal soul, that there is a God, and so forth, man recognizes from the light of nature.
Note b. The resurrection is not against reason, for: 1. if God is almighty, then one must grant the possibility of the resurrection; 2. if God is just, then he must punish or reward body and soul equally, since both acted united in life. It would be unjust to punish the soul and not the body. — Yet this conclusion rests on premises which reason does not have of itself.

4. Einwände der Vernunft.
Einwand 1.
Neb. 1904, 37. 38.
Dagegen: a.
Matth. 22, 23—33.

4. Objections of reason.
Objection a. How can people who have been eaten by animals or burned by fire rise again? It is impossible to bring back together the atoms that have undergone so many transformations; for example, part of an apple tree once consisted of matter that had once been in the body of Roger Williams. Neb. 1904, 37. 38.
In reply: a. Have not chemists long since broken down transformed substances into their original parts, and should God not be able to do this? Matt. 22:29: the power of God.
b. Can you not put back together the scattered wheels of a watch — a skilled watchmaker can do it.
c. Do we not see a thousand miracles in nature?
d. If God made the world out of nothing and Adam out of a clod of earth, should he not just as easily be able to bring forth the dead out of the dust?
e. Where were you a hundred years ago? God made you. Can he not make you again?
f. Whoever believes that God can annihilate everything on the Last Day, without a trace of it remaining, can just as well believe everything else.
Objection b. But if part of a person passes, after his death, into another person, which of the two will receive that matter? — What prevents us from assuming that God prevents this.
Objection c. The world has already existed so long, and yet no dead person has ever come back.
Objection d. Then to whom does the woman belong who had the seven husbands? Matt. 22:23–33.

5. Heathens and the resurrection. Among the heathen no hope of the resurrection of the body is to be found. Aeschylus.
Objection. Why did the heathen preserve mummies? — Perhaps some soul might wish, after the death of its body, to enter it again in the course of its wandering.

6. Scripture and the resurrection. The resurrection is clearly taught in Scripture.
A. Old Testament. The doctrine of the resurrection is attested in the Old Testament in many passages.
a. Gen. 3:15. If mankind had to die on account of sin, then redemption through the seed of the woman means life and resurrection.
Note. Did Adam and Eve understand and believe this? — They surely had some knowledge of so important a doctrine of salvation; they doubtless reflected further on these words. Perhaps God also spoke still more to them.
b. Gen. 22:18. The curse was death. The blessing is life and resurrection. The God of Abraham.
c. Exod. 3:6. God is not a God of the dead. Mark 12:26, 27.
d. The First Commandment. I am the Lord your God, that is, your gracious God. Therefore he does not leave you in death.
e. 1 Sam. 2:6. He kills and makes alive.
f. Job 19:25–27: out of my flesh shall I see God. Him I shall see for myself, that is, to my own good, to my happiness and salvation. Dativus ethicus. See Bible Revision.
g. Psalms. 17:15: I shall awake in your likeness. 49:16: he will redeem [my soul] from Sheol.
h. The Prophets. Isa. 25:8: the veil (death) with which all peoples are veiled — Isa. 26:19: your dead shall live. Isa. 66: like grass.
i. Dan. 12:2: many shall awake.
Note. 'Many' often means a great multitude in Scripture, that is, all. Matt. 20:28. Rom. 5:19. But that 'many' cannot here mean 'all' is clear from the original text: many of those who sleep. R. Pi. 348.
k. Hos. 13:14: redeem from Sheol.
Note a. The same doctrine in the Old as in the New Testament. Acts 26:22. Paul said nothing except what the prophets and Moses had said.
Note b. If anyone does not find the doctrine of the resurrection in the Old Testament, the fault lies with him. Matt. 22:29: you know not the Scriptures.
Note c. Only with respect to clarity and distinctness is there a difference between the Old and New Testament.
Note d. The fathers also believed in the resurrection; for example, 2 Macc. 7. The story of the seven brothers. The Shunammite woman. Jo. 1906, 38.
B. New Testament.
a. Christ. Matt. 10:28: body and soul perish in hell. If the body is to go into hell, it must rise again. John 5:28: the hour is coming. 10: to raise up at the Last Day. 11:25: I am the resurrection. 14:19: you shall live also.
b. The apostles. Acts 4:2; 17:31, 32; 21:15. Rom. 8:17; 8:10, 11: he will make your mortal bodies alive. 1 Cor. 15. Phil. 3:10, 11. 1 Thess. 4:16: the dead in Christ will rise first. 2 Cor. 5:10: that everyone may receive (also as to the body), etc.
Note. Sayings which appear to be against the resurrection are explained from their context, for example Job 14:14: do you think that a dead man will live again? (Return to this earthly life.) Ps. 88:5: among the dead whom you remember no more (spoken out of severe spiritual trial). Isa. 26:14: the dead do not rise. (Compare Rev. 20:5.) Isa. 43:17: and rise not up. (This concerns the complete destruction of the Egyptians in the Red Sea.) Jer. 51:39: an eternal sleep from which they never awaken. (The complete downfall of Babylon.)

8. Deniers of the resurrection.
a. Those named in Scripture: the Sadducees. Acts 23:8. Matt. 22:23. The Athenians. Acts 17:32. Some of the Corinthians. 1 Cor. 15:12. Hymenaeus and Philetus. 2 Tim. 2:18. The heathen. 1 Thess. 4:13: the others, who have no hope.
b. 2. Pope John the 23rd. Gnostics. Marcionites. 3. Socinians, Unitarians, Swedenborgians. 4. The moderns, who speak of a glorious life of the soul in heaven. 5. Rationalists. Wisdom 2:1f.
Note a. The resurrection is denied by many because they fear it.
Note b. If one denies the resurrection, then
1. one ceases to be a Christian. 1 Tim. 1:19: made shipwreck of the faith;
2. all fear of the Lord falls away. Who will fear God, if with death everything is over?
3. all comfort is gone. Then we are the most miserable of all people.
Objection. How could the people in the congregation at Corinth, who thought the resurrection was nothing, still be counted among the Christians? — Christians sometimes speak loose words which, at the bottom of their hearts, they do not really mean.
Note c. A distinction must be made between unbelief and spiritual trial.

10. The resurrection takes place
a. in a moment. It is not a process of development. Compare 1 Cor. 15:52; on the Last Day. John 6:40, 54: to raise up on the Last Day. 11:23, 24. 1 Cor. 15:51, 52. 1 Thess. 4:16. Rev. 20:11–13. Third Article: 'and on the Last Day,' etc.
Note a. Of a resurrection of the martyrs a thousand years beforehand, Scripture knows nothing.
Note b. The first resurrection, Rev. 20:5, is a spiritual one. See § 1.
Objection. The first resurrection is the one named in Matt. 27:51. — But Rev. 20 speaks only of souls.
Antithesis. The Adventists hold that the resurrection of the unjust follows a thousand years after that of the righteous;
c. through his word. John 5:28: his voice. Rom. 4:17: calls into being the things that are not. Luke 8:54: Talitha cumi.

11. Who will rise again?
a. Not the animals. The creature shall only be set free from bondage. Rom. 8:21.
b. All people. John 5:28: all who are in the graves. 2 Tim. 4:1: the living and the dead. Rev. 20:13: earth, fire, water must give up the dead. Third Article: 'me and all the dead.' And specifically:
1. the godly as well as the ungodly. 1 Thess. 4:17: the dead in Christ. Acts 24:15: the just and the unjust. Abel. David. Peter. Cain. Judas. Pharaoh, etc. Also the Leipzig Jew who said he would remain lying [in the grave] on the Last Day;
2. also those who died in the womb.
Antithesis. Some Jews, Talmudists, and Adventists teach the annihilation of the ungodly. Hofmann.
Note. Those still living will be changed in a moment. 1 Cor. 15:51, 52. 1 Thess. 4:17: caught up. 2 Cor. 5:4: clothed upon. 'But those who still have life, the Lord will transform and renew from that hour on.' Hymn 433, 2. — Of the transformation of the ungodly, Scripture is silent.
Antithesis. Kliefoth: the ground and cause of this transformation lies in the unique holiness of these survivors.
12. The author of the resurrection is
a. not man. In all his attempts man has come to miserable shame.
b. not some little spark of life slumbering in the corpse (a seed of resurrection).
c. but the triune God:
the Father. Rom. 8:11: he who raised Christ up will also make your mortal bodies alive. 1 Cor. 6:14. 2 Cor. 4:14. John 5:21.
the Son. Job 19:25. John 11:25. 6:40. 5:21: the Son gives life to whom he will. Rev. 1:17, 18: he has the keys of death.
Note. Also according to his human nature. 1 Cor. 15:21: through a man comes the resurrection. John 5:27, 28: the Son of Man.
the Holy Spirit. There is no explicit Scripture passage for this. Rom. 8:11 means either: through his Spirit who dwells in you, or: because his Spirit dwells in you.
Note. Luther ascribes the resurrection especially to the Spirit. Third Article.
The resurrection of the righteous.
13. The ground of their resurrection is Christ. He has
a. overcome sin and death. 2 Tim. 1:10: taken away the power of death. 1 Cor. 15:54–57: death is swallowed up in victory. Heb. 2:14, 15: therefore we cannot remain in death. In Christ we are all made alive;
b. overcome the devil. Heb. 2:14, 15. 1 John 3:8. Christ's victory over his enemies is the guarantee of our resurrection.
c. himself risen. The firstfruits. The Head. John 14:19: from his resurrection flows ours. I live, and you shall live also. Hymn 111, 2. 128, 4. 112, 6. 422, 8. 278, 4.
Note. Had Christ not come into the world, there would be no resurrection to life for us either.
14. The same body will rise again. John 5:28: those who are in the graves. The mortal body. Rom. 8:11. 1 Cor. 15:53: this corruptible. Phil. 3:21: our vile body. Job 19:25: the same eyes, no stranger. Luke 21:16–18: not a hair of your head shall perish. Ps. 34:20: he keeps all his bones. 1 Cor. 15:51: transformed, thus no other body.
Note a. This already lies in the word 'resurrection.'
Note b. The substance of the bodies will be the same, even though their properties will be different.
Note c. Therefore we hope for a recognition by the old, familiar features.
Note d. Types. Christ. His nail-prints. Luke 24:39: it is I myself. Mary recognizes him by his voice. — Enoch and Elijah, who were taken up to heaven with their bodies.
Note e. If we were to receive a new body, this would mean
1. a new creation, not a resurrection;
2. death would after all have triumphed and swallowed up our body;
3. a body that had done nothing good would be rewarded.
15. The form of the body.
a. Perfection. All missing limbs will be restored; all deformity, which is a consequence of sin, will be removed.
Note. Mark 9:43 does not mean to say that there will be cripples in eternal life.
b. Size. This will probably be the same as at our death. Rev. 19:5; 20:12; 11:18: small and great.
Note. Some assume the size of the risen Christ. Eph. 4:13: the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Augustine: God will give the children the height of Christ's body.
c. Sex. These will probably not be abolished. Matt. 22:30: neither marry nor are given in marriage.
d. Races. Differences of race are probably a consequence of sin, which may therefore perhaps cease; yet one should not definitely comfort the Negro with the assurance that he will one day become white.

18. Transfiguration of the body. The body will be
a. no longer a natural body as it is now;
b. but instead
1. a spiritual body. 1 Cor. 15:44.
Note. This is not to be understood as though the body ceased to be a body and became spirit. Not a spirit, but a spiritual body — a body with the properties of the spirit — will rise.
Antithesis. Harms: corporeality is the end of all God's ways;
2. a glorified body. Phil. 3:20: like his glorious body. 1 Cor. 15: to rise in glory and power. Hymn 111, 7. 422, 5. 430, 8.

19. Properties of a spiritual body:
a. It is not bound to space and time; it can be now here, now there; it knows no obstacle (through stone and door). Swift. 1 Thess. 4:17: caught up.
b. It needs no sleep, no clothing, no food. It will neither hunger nor thirst. Here we take in substances and excrete them; this exchange of matter (for example, sweating) will cease.
c. It is invisible to earthly eyes and can make itself visible. Matt. 27:53: appeared to many.
d. It has nothing to do with married life, the begetting of children. Luke 20:34–37.
e. It is incorruptible, immortal. Luke 20:36. 1 Cor. 15:42. Hymn 417, 1.
Note a. Here [in this life] life is a journey toward the grave.
Note b. God is immortal by his very nature; man, however, is immortal through God's grace.
Note c. In Adam there was the possibility of losing immortality. Among the blessed this possibility, too, is excluded.

21. Comparisons. Our body will be
a. like Christ's. Phil. 3:21: like the image of his Son. Rom. 8:29. He will bear the image of the heavenly. 1 Cor. 15:49. Like him. 1 John 3:2. On Christ's glorified body, see [illegible] of Christ § 3.
Note. Yet this likeness has its limits: alike not in degree, but in kind. Wholly excluded here are the properties which Christ's body has by virtue of its personal union with the Godhead: omnipotence, omnipresence, and so forth;
b. like the angels. Luke 20:37. Of course the essential difference between man and angel remains: men have a body, angels do not.
22. Degrees of glory. One star excels another in brightness. Gold is more beautiful than silver.
23. The same body, and yet different. Examples:
a. The wheat that comes from the grain of wheat. — The same, and yet different.
b. As a man one is different than in childhood, and yet the same.
c. A sick person who becomes well;
d. A person who takes off a shabby garment and puts on a beautiful one.
e. Dirty water, distilled.
f. Iron that has been made glowing hot.
f. The flesh of man is different from the flesh of animals, and yet both are flesh.

24. Auferſtehung der Gottloſen.
A. Auch die Gottloſen müſſen auferſtehen. Ap. 24.
was den Leib betrifft.
B. Grund ihrer Auferſtehung iſt
1. nicht die Auferſtehung Chriſti, dann wäre
auch die Verdammunis Wirkung ſeines Ver⸗
dienſtes.
Einwand. 1 Kor. 15, 21: in Chriſto werden
alle lebendig gemacht. — Der Apoſtel redet im
ganzen Kapitel von Chriſten.
Antith. Die Auferſtehung der Gottloſen grün⸗
det ſich auf Chriſti Verdienſt. Calviniſten;
ö 2. ſondern die Gerechtigkeit Gottes. Es iſt Got⸗
tes heiliger Zorn, der die Gottloſen aufweckt. Anm. a.

Anm. a. Ob unter ihnen die Mißgeſtalten und Krüp⸗

Dräbrüne aus dem Schlaf aufwecken, ſo leicht
ſeiner Allmacht. Wie wir jemanden durch weckt Gott die Toten auf;
2. ſeiner Weisheit. Er weiß, wo jedes Stäublein des Leibes iſt;
Lied 434, 9. 10.
b. auf Seiten der Menſchens ihre Seligkeit
oder Verdammnis.
26. Gebrauch dieſer Lehre.
a. Für Ungläubige. Tut Buße. Wer Chriſtum nicht
als Heiland annimmt, muß ihn als Richter annehmen.
b. Für Chriſten.
Zur Mahnung.
Riegel.
3. Mache deine Glieder, die der Herrlichkeit teilhaftig werden ſollen, nicht zu Hurengliedern, ſondern zu einem Tempel des h. Geiſtes;
4. Führe die Deinen zu Chriſto.
5. Treib fleißig Miſſion.
6. Trag alle Leiden in Geduld.
Zum Troſt.

24. The resurrection of the ungodly.
A. The ungodly too must rise again. Acts 24:15. That they might remain in the grave would be gospel for them — a cancellation of their damnation, at least as far as the body is concerned.
B. The ground of their resurrection is
1. not Christ's resurrection — for then their damnation, too, would be an effect of his merit.
Objection. 1 Cor. 15:21: in Christ shall all be made alive. — The apostle is speaking, in the whole chapter, of Christians.
Antithesis. The Calvinists hold that the resurrection of the ungodly is grounded in Christ's merit;
2. but rather the righteousness of God. It is God's holy wrath that awakens the ungodly.
Note a. As the civil authority has a criminal condemned to death cured by a physician, so that the sentence may be carried out, so God does with the ungodly.
Note b. The ground of their resurrection lies in their sin and their unbelief, and in the words: you shall die the death. Gen. 2:17.
C. The condition of their bodies. They will be:
1. immortal. Rom. 10:28: body and soul perish in hell. Mark 9:44: where their worm does not die;
2. loathsome. Isa. 66:25: an abhorrence to all flesh. Dan. 12:2: to everlasting shame and contempt.
Note a. Whether deformities and the crippled will cease among them, Scripture does not say.
Note b. In general Scripture says little about the condition of their bodies.
25. The purpose of the resurrection is
a. on God's side, the glorification of his name and his honor, namely
1. of his omnipotence. As we wake someone from sleep by rousing them, just so easily does God wake the dead;
2. of his wisdom. He knows where every speck of dust of the body is;
3. of his righteousness. Indeed the objection is raised that it is against God's justice to raise a person, who perhaps sinned here for seventy years, to eternal punishment, but one must not measure God's justice by our reason. O God, how righteous you are. Hymn 434, 9, 10.
b. on man's side, their blessedness or damnation.
26. The use of this doctrine.
a. For unbelievers. Repent. Whoever does not accept Christ as Savior must accept him as Judge.
b. For Christians.
By way of admonition.
1. See to it that you belong to the truly believing. Only he who has part in the first resurrection will experience the second, to eternal life. Only he who is planted together with Christ in a like death (Rom. 6:5) becomes a partaker of the resurrection to life.
2. Do not become complacent. There is a resurrection to damnation. This doctrine serves us so that we may keep our flesh in check. Riegel.
3. Do not make your members, which are to share in glory, members of a harlot, but a temple of the Holy Spirit;
4. Lead your own to Christ.
5. Be diligent in mission work.
6. Bear all sufferings with patience.
By way of comfort.
1. in life. There is a resurrection to life. Examples: Job. The mother with the seven children. 2 Macc. Magister Gerbe. L. W. 23, 369;
2. at the grave of loved ones. We need not mourn as do others who have no hope. The seed-corn;
3. on our deathbed. Death is swallowed up in victory.
Note. From this, pastors may recognize the glory of their evangelical preaching office.
