Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

2. Examples for us in this are a. Christ. Eph. 5, 25: he gave himself for us. John 13, 34: love one another, as I have loved you. Note. How he cared for the poor when he walked on earth! b. the apostolic congregations, Jerusalem, Antioch. 1. the rich sold of their goods. Acts 2, 45. - Christian socialism: what is mine is thine. 2. almoners were appointed. 3. collections were taken for the brethren in Judea. Acts 11, 29. 1 Cor. 16, 1-3. Rom. 15, 25-27. Rome, Constantinople: 1500 poor, the treasures of the church. Note a. Many Christians at that time could find no work. Note b. What an influence this charitable activity had on the heathen! Acts 2, 47: and having favor with all the people. Mission through conduct. Note c. That was no heavy burden for them. Note d. In those days they had no relief societies; c. Luther and others. "Out with it, Joachim." 3. The motive should be a. love for the Savior. What is done to the brethren is done to Christ. The more splendidly one treats the poor, the more splendidly one treats Christ. Note. It is a disgrace when Christ must beg on earth; b. love for one's neighbor, especially brotherly love. Christians are one body, most intimately joined. Note a. Love is a mark of Christians. John 13, 35: by this shall all men know, etc. Note b. On the Last Day Christ will judge, by the proof of Christian love, whether one has stood in the faith or not. Matt. 25, 35: I was an hungred, etc., c. the glorious reward. Prov. 19, 17: the Lord shall repay him good. 28, 27: he shall not lack. Caring for the poor always brings a harvest. Yet one should not do it for the sake of the reward.

Anm. a. Anm. e. 4. Who should care for the poor? a. the relatives first. 1 Tim. 5, 16: if any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; b. the congregation, when the relatives cannot or will not. Note a. Properly speaking, the congregation has to do only with the Gospel. It should not be regarded as an earthly relief society. Note b. Since one Christian helps another out of need, the congregation is of course also a mutual relief association. Note c. Poor relief is the duty of the whole congregation and not of a relief society within the congregation. - A sad substitute for Christian brotherly love. Note d. If the congregation does not do its duty, that is a. a disgrace before the world: the Christians talk so much of love and let their brethren sit in need, b. it drives many weak Christians into the lodges and relief associations. If we take good care of our poor, we thereby oppose such associations. Note e. Every congregation member must know: if I come into need, my brethren will stand by my side. That too is a testimony of our faith to the world. Note f. If we do not take care of our poor, then our zeal against the lodges is Pharisaical. Note g. Complaints that the congregations do not care for their poor are sometimes a. justified. Things are not with us as they should be, b. unjustified. Some people are never satisfied with what is necessary. Note h. Some rail against the congregation and have themselves never given a cent to the poor fund. c. the pastor. He should concern himself with the poor. d. the authorities. They must support the poor. Note. Christians should not, without necessity, to the shame of their congregation, accept support from the state. 1 Thess. 4, 11. 12: that ye may have need of nothing.

Anm. a. Einwand a. Einwand b.

5. Hints for the congregation. How the congregation should care for the poor is not prescribed and will mostly be governed by conditions in the congregation. The following hints may serve toward this. The congregation can a. set up a poor fund; b. elect almoners. Note a. As almoners one should choose 1. people who possess the trust of the congregation; 2. sensible, wise men, for some poor conceal their need, some exaggerate it; 3. Christian people who think not merely of physical satisfaction but also of salvation. Note b. It is not advisable to bring every case before the congregation. Some poor people would rather go hungry. Note c. One should try to prevent murmuring from arising. Acts 6, 1. Poor relief often gives rise to friction. 6. How one should help: a. quietly, so that the left hand does not know what the right hand does; b. not merely with money, but also with articles of clothing, foodstuffs. The sick should be nursed, the unemployed provided with work; c. in cases of misfortune one should stand helpfully by; d. if one is deceived, one should not let it discourage one; e. one should help everyone, regardless of whether he 1. has given something to the poor fund or not. The family should not go hungry on that account; 2. has come into poverty through his own fault or not. Note. That is a different kind of care than that of the lodge, namely a work of Christian love. Objection a. You might yourself fall into poverty through giving. - There is no fear of that. Objection b. The giving becomes too much. - A Christian must be ready to give the last cent and rejoice that he can do so.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
