Arbeitgeber.
Anm. a. Das Kapital iſt kein Feind der Arbeit. Ka-
pital und Arbeit ſind keine feindlichen Gegenſätze. Recht
angewandtes Kapital vermehrt das Einkommen des Ar⸗
beiters. ö
Anm. b. Kapital und Arbeit ſind auf einander an⸗
gewieſen. Ohne Kapital kann man kein Geſchäft an⸗
Ih. Ohne Arbeiter im Geſchäft hilft alles Kapital ö
nichts.
Anm. c. Beides könnte ſegensreich nebeneinander be.

1. The labor question concerns a struggle between capital and labor, or worker and employer.
Note a. Capital is no enemy of labor. Capital and labor are not hostile opposites. Rightly applied capital increases the worker's income.
Note b. Capital and labor are dependent on one another. Without capital one cannot start a business. Without workers in the business, all capital is of no use.
Note c. Both could exist side by side in a beneficial way, had sin, the abuse of capital, not come into the world.
Note d. The distinction between employer and worker existed already in Abraham's time and will remain until the end.
Note e. The struggle against capital runs through the whole of world history. The Peasants' War.
Note f. The cause of the struggle between worker and employer is selfishness. Therefore employers bleed the workers, and vice versa.
Note g. It is not easy to form a right judgment in this question.

2. Löſung der Arbeiterfrage.
A. Dieſe Frage will man löſen
a. durch Einführung des Kommunismus. Sozialiſten;
Anm. a. Man will die beſtehende Ordnung nicht verbeſſern, ſondern ganz umſtoßen.
Anm. b.
a. Kreditbanken, Konſumvereine, Bauvereine, Penſion, Wohltätigkeitsanſtalten, die manche Fabrikherren für ihre Arbeiter einrichten;
b. Unfallverſicherung, Kranken- und Invalidenverſicherung, Altersverſorgung, die der Staat in die Hände nimmt. Deutſchland;
c. Schiedsgerichte, durch welche Streitigkeiten ge— ſchlichtet werden.
Anm.
Anm. a.
beiterfrage.
Anm. b. Gerechtigkeit und Liebe wäre alles, was zur
Löſung der Frage nötig wäre.
Anm. e.

2. Solution of the labor question.
A. This question people seek to solve
a. through the introduction of communism. Socialists;
b. through the revival of the guilds and trade associations. In the time of the guilds more Christian equality prevailed. The guilds did not readily let their members sink into want;
c. through the introduction of another economic system: state socialism instead of free competition.
Note a. People do not want to improve the existing order, but to overturn it entirely.
Note b. With a change of system, new evils appear and the old selfishness remains.
B. Something toward a solution can be contributed by
a. credit unions, consumer cooperatives, building societies, pensions, charitable institutions, which some factory owners set up for their workers;
b. accident insurance, health and disability insurance, old-age provision, which the state takes into its hands. Germany;
c. courts of arbitration, through which disputes are settled.
Note. But with this the labor question is not thereby removed from the world.
C. The only means that can contribute to a real solution of the labor question is God's Word.
Note a. Were all men Christians, and did they love their neighbor as themselves, there would be no labor question.
Note b. Justice and love would be all that would be needed for the solution of the question.
Note c. The labor question will remain unsolved until the Last Day.

Kirche und Arbeiterfrage
3. Kirche und Arbeiterfrage. Hierbei iſt zu beachten:
Anm. a.
Er braucht nicht immer lange Reden dar⸗
über zu halten.
Anm. b.
2. ſind die Leute oft leidenſchaftlich. Und Lei⸗
denſchaft verſchließt die Augen gegen die Wahr⸗
heit;
Anm. a. Der Paſtor ſoll keine volkswirtſchaftlichen
Probleme aufſtellen und löſen wollen.
Anm. b.

3. The church and the labor question. Here it should be noted:
a. Insofar as the solution of the labor question is a political matter, the church has nothing to do with it. Insofar as sinful means are employed to solve this question, the church too must concern itself with this question.
b. Christian socialism is a mingling of church and state.
c. As often as the church attacks the enemy not with God's Word but with other means, it goes badly.
3. The pastor and the labor question. The pastor should
a. instruct Christians on the labor question in sermons, congregational meetings, and privately.
Note a. He need not always deliver long speeches about it.
Note b. If someone does not take the instruction to heart, then let the pastor continue teaching. For
1. nowadays one sees the wrong done in labor unions so generally regarded as right;
2. people are often passionate. And passion closes the eyes against the truth;
3. Christians who will not go along with the wrong lose work and wages.
Does a doctor give up on the patient if the medicine first prescribed does not help?
b. in treating this question, proceed from the center of Christianity (justification), so that Christians, out of love and gratitude toward God, avoid everything sinful.
Note a. The pastor should not try to set up and solve economic problems.
Note b. The pastor should not let himself be troubled by the reproach: "He sides with the rich."

5. The Christian and the labor question. The Christian should
a. have nothing to do with the works of darkness in the field of labor either.
Note. The Christian has to do only with the question: What is right and what is wrong?
b. if for conscience' sake he must suffer contempt, 1 Pet. 4, 4, or lose his bread, that is grace with God. Let him comfort himself with God's promise. Ps. 37, 25.
Note a. Even in the time of the apostles it was hard for Christians to earn their bread.
Note b. Fellow Christians should take up the cause of workers without wages:
1. the congregation should support such, if necessary;
2. Christian employers should, if possible, procure work for them.
