Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Amt der Schlüſſ ſel

—

Neuluthera⸗ ner. Buffalo. Anm. a.

Whoever believes as Peter did has the keys. Note a. Peter is not the rock on which the church stands; rather, Peter stands with the church upon the rock. Note b. Christ does not say: upon this Petros (masculine), but: upon this Petra (feminine). 4. In Peter's case it is not a question of the possession of the power, which he already had as a Christian, but of its public use. Antithesis. Papacy. The keys were given to Peter and then passed on to the Pope. Note. Even if they had been given to Peter alone, it would not follow that Peter bequeathed them to the Pope; b. not to the apostles as apostles. Then we would no longer have the power of the keys. Note. The apostles themselves, with all that they are and have, belong to the church; c. not to the disciples as officeholders. New Lutherans. Buffalo. Note a. The officeholders, the preachers, do not first bring the keys into the congregation. The keys are not from the pastor, but are given directly to the church. Note b. The expression "given to the church" would then be a synecdoche - the whole (the church) instead of a part (the pastors). Against this: If the keys were given to the officeholders, it would follow that: 1. we could only be certain that we had the keys if they had come to us from the apostles in an unbroken sequence (succession). Were the chain broken anywhere, all certainty would be gone; 2. if the pastors in a country died out, the power of the keys would thereby be gone. We could have no forgiveness without such an officeholder; 3. if the pastors became wolves, the congregation would be defrauded of the power of the keys; 4. only officeholders could partake of the Lord's Supper, pray the Lord's Prayer, do mission work; 5. the preachers would form a class of nobility far exalted above the Christians. The Christians would have no free access to God; the preachers would be mediators between God and the congregation and no longer servants of the congregation; 6. how then could one understand the words: Receive the Holy Ghost? Do even ungodly officeholders have the Spirit? Or has Christ given the Spirit to the office?

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
