Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

1. Das Alter hat a. ſeine beſonderen Gebrechen. Pred. 12, 1. Jeſ. 46, 4: Ich will euch tragen bis in's Alter. Anm. a.

1. Old age has a. its particular infirmities. Eccles. 12, 1. The evil days. The harsh winter; Ma. 24, 146. 8, 33. b. but also its particular comfort and promise. Isa. 46, 4: I will carry you even to old age. Note a. If youth was already consecrated to God, how much more is old age then adorned with a beautiful crown! Such Christians are like a tree, firmly rooted in faith and childlike trust. Ps. 92, 15: When they are old they shall still bring forth fruit, they shall be fat and flourishing. Note b. On the other hand there is nothing more miserable than gray hair on the head and a hollow heart and an unreconciled conscience. Note c. Christians pray: "[illegible] not in old age, when I grow gray." Ps. 7[illegible]

Homiletik. 23. Sonnt. nach Trin. Ev.

3. Before the Flood people reached a great age, so that God's word might be better propagated through oral speech. Homiletics. Funeral sermons. Christian Amendment. Treatises. L. W. 21, 88. 89. W. 95, 18. 19. Ka. 89, 43. 44. 1. The "Christian Amendment" is an amendment that some would like to add to the Constitution of the United States, in which our people would confess themselves as a Christian people to Jesus Christ as our Lord and God and to the Bible as our highest authority. Note. This movement originated with the Presbyterians in Massachusetts in 1863. 2. Such an amendment would be a. an untruth. That our people acknowledge Christ and Christianity cannot be said; b. an injustice toward non-Christians, who as citizens would be required to confess themselves to the Constitution; c. a danger for legal scholars, who would appeal to this amendment wherever it proved convenient. What kind of scriptural interpretation that would produce! d. a mingling of church and state. 3. Therefore we should oppose this amendment in the right way. Note. The atheists oppose it because they will not acknowledge Jesus as Lord; we, however, because we do not consider the Constitution the proper place for such a confession. Homiletics. 23rd Sunday after Trin. Gospel.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
