Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Apostasy. Essays on this. Gna. 179. Cas. 118. Ma. 14, 207—213. 17, 210—219. 257—262. 5, 32—40. Luth. 89, 11. Outline. Falling away from pure doctrine. §§ 2—4. Falling away from the faith. §§ 5—13. What does ‘falling’ mean? § 5. Can a Christian fall? § 6. Who can fall? § 7. Dangers. § 8. How the fall happens. § 9. How dreadful it is. § 10. Advice. § 11. How we are kept. § 12. Application. § 13. 1. A distinction must be made: falling away from pure doctrine (the Lutheran church) and falling away from Christ, from the faith. Note a. Every error is poison for the soul, but not every error immediately overthrows the state of grace. Note b. Not everyone who has fallen away from Lutheran doctrine has thereby fallen away from Christ, and not everyone who has fallen away from Christ has thereby dissolved his outward connection with the Lutheran church. Note c. Falling away from the fundamental articles — justification, the gospel, etc. — is at the same time falling away from the faith. Falling away from pure doctrine.

c. Even the elect. They can fall wholly out of grace, yet do not remain lying in their fall until death. d. You too. If Peter fell, how easily can you fall. Do not be secure. e. A whole nation. (Synecdoche) e.g. 1. The people of Israel in the time of Moses and Elijah. 2. Our own people. Note. Then God's visitations of judgment break in. f. A whole congregation. (Synecdoche.) E.g., the congregation at Ephesus. Rev. 2:5. (Ma. 17, 210, 211. Mich. 98, 8.) At Corinth. (Ma. 14, 208.) In Galatia. Gal. 1:6. 3:1—5. 4:8—11. (Ka. 1900, 17—22.) Note a. This can soon be noticed in a congregation: the church grows emptier, the number of communicants smaller, family devotions rarer, love grows cold, worldliness spreads. Note b. What is then to be done? The sleepers must be awakened. Strengthen what remains, that is about to die. Rev. 3:2. Note c. There is still help. A fallen congregation can still become a flourishing congregation. Note d. If, however, the sleepers keep on sleeping despite all warning and admonition, then God at last takes away his Word and grace. Rev. 2:5. Remove the lampstand.

9. How the fall can happen. a. Suddenly, through willful sin. David, Peter. Gal. 1:6: So quickly. John 12:35: That the darkness overtake you not. (In the East, night comes without preceding twilight.) b. Gradually, step by step. 2 Pet. 2:20, 21: In the filth of the world. a. Entangled, and b. overcome. Note a. The Christian stops watching and is overtaken by sin; stops praying and is like a soldier without a weapon; stops fighting against sins of weakness, which then become besetting sins. Judas. Note b. If no check is made, the fall keeps spreading further. A snow avalanche. Leaven. A tree that is dying. c. Secretly. Rev. 3:1: You have a name that you live, and you are dead. A Christian in name only. d. Openly before everyone. Demas. They leave the church and go over to its enemies. e. Consciously. Judas. Cain. f. Unconsciously. Rev. 3:17: And you do not know that you are wretched. g. Quite easily. The Galatians; wanting to be saved through the Law. h. In doctrine. i. In life. Letting sin rule over oneself. 10. How dreadful the fall from grace is. a. Whoever falls away gives God and his grace their dismissal, and loses everything he has: sonship, blessedness. It profits him nothing to have once stood in faith. Note. Even the old, already forgiven guilt is reckoned against him again. The wicked servant. b. The last state becomes worse than the first: 1. He is burdened with far more guilt. What great grace he has trampled underfoot! 2. He is far more hardened against the Word, which he has heard so often. Note. It goes with him as with a blacksmith, who in the end no longer feels the fire so much. 3. The devil chains him to himself all the more firmly. Seven spirits. Luke 11:26. 4. Therefore such a person is far harder to convert. 2 Pet. 2:20, 21. c. Even here he already goes about with an evil conscience. d. His condemnation is all the greater. Note a. All the sadder is the fall of a Christian, because he usually drags others down with him — parents their children, pastors their hearers. Note b. The higher the standing of the person who falls, the more dreadful the fall. A large tree (or house) does more damage when it falls. The fall of a pastor does more harm than that of a member of the congregation. Note c. Dreadful is spiritual suicide; equally dreadful is spiritual execution — destroying the spiritual life of another, 1 Cor. 3:17. Defiling the temple of God. Woe to all who help in this.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
