Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

21. Das gemeinſchaftliche Gebet mit Andersgläubigen

724, S 95—-99. 703, § 31. Anm. a. Common prayer with those of other faiths. One cannot pray in common with those of other faiths, for a. God's Word commands us to have no fellowship with false teachers. Rom. 16:17: avoid them. Matt. 7:15: beware. b. We are to confess Christ and the faith before men. Matt. 10:32. We may not withdraw ourselves from this duty even for half an hour, for the sake of holding a common service with those of other faiths. c. We should not make ourselves partakers of others' sins. 2 John 11. This is what he does who enters into fellowship with false believers. d. Through common prayer we would pretend before the whole world a unity that does not exist. Hypocrisy. The mouth feigns a unity of which the heart knows nothing. It would be an untruth if an assembly, one part of which rejects as false what the other part teaches, were to pray together. e. We would after all be praying against one another. While we, for example, pray for the victory of sola gratia, others pray for the victory of false doctrine and the defeat of divine truth. Not even one "Our Father" could be prayed in one and the same sense. f. Whoever says A must also say B. Whoever begins fellowship in prayer must, to be consistent, also introduce fellowship in the pulpit and at the Lord's Supper: fellowship in prayer yet no fellowship in the pulpit would be a contradiction. g. The consequence of this would be that false doctrine would appear harmless and a matter of indifference, and pure doctrine would be forgotten. h. We should give no offense. Not only the false believers but also weak persons among us would take it as a recognition and a unionistic toleration of their false doctrine. i. The Lutheran confessional writings, too, take this position. 724, § 95-99. 703, § 31. Note a. One cannot pray together with an excommunicated person either. Note b. Here belongs also the misuse of prayer at the opening of conventions, world's fairs, in the chamber of deputies, where now a Unitarian, now a Jew, offers the prayer. Note c. If there is no orthodox church in a place, one should hold a service at home. Note d. If one is compelled by circumstances to attend a service of false believers, one should, although not joining in the prayer, conduct oneself decently. Note e. Therefore we do not yet consider those of other faiths to be non-Christians. Objection. Such a position is said to be a lack of love, to be a stubborn insistence on being right. -- It is precisely true love that does not indulge every

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
