Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Note d. God does not call by force, by the sword, by compulsion; that would be no calling. Note e. Preparatory means (aids) are the conscience (Rom. 2:14, 15: since their conscience bears them witness), nature (Rom. 1:19, 20: God's eternal power is perceived through his works), the benefits by which God bears witness of himself to men (Acts 14:17), judgments of punishment (calls to repentance), the crowing of cocks, good examples. These are all means meant to draw our attention to the Word. Note f. We are no longer to expect an extraordinary calling. Luke 16:29: They have Moses and the Prophets. To expect that God should do something special for us is presumption.

1. The goal and purpose of the calling is a. repentance, faith, the sanctification of man. [illegible]: to call sinners to repentance. 1 Thess. 4:7: calls to sanctification. 1 Tim. 6:12: to the fight of faith. 1 Pet. 2:21: to suffering with patience. Matt. 20:1–6: to labor in God's vineyard (finis intermedius); b. salvation. 1 Tim. 6:12: to eternal life. 2 Thess. 2:12: to his kingdom and his glory. 2 Pet. 1:9: to his marvelous light. 1 Cor. 1:9: to the fellowship of his Son. Eph. 4:4: to one and the same hope. Gal. 5:13: to freedom. Col. 3:15: to peace. 1 Pet. 3:9: to a blessing. 1 Pet. 5:10: to his eternal glory. Rev. 19:9: to the supper (finis ultimus). Note. The terminus a quo, out of which God calls us, is the darkness, spiritual death. See Conversion, § 3. 5. Properties of the calling. The calling is a. universal. Matt. 11:28: Come unto me, all. Matt. 22:9: as many as you find. Acts 17:30: all men everywhere. Rom. 10:18: their sound is gone out into all lands. Luke 24:47: to be preached among all nations. 1 Tim. 2:4: God will have all men to be helped. Note a. Three times God has called the whole of mankind: in the time of Adam, of Noah, and of the apostles. Rom. 10:18. Mark 16:20. That the apostles proclaimed the gospel to the whole world we cannot, of course, prove from church history down to every single detail. Note b. Thus God has brought to himself: Abraham, Job, Ruth, the Magi, the centurion, Cornelius. Objection 1. In the Old Testament God let the Gentiles go on in blindness. — The many wanderings of God's people among the Gentiles were meant to spread the knowledge of the Word among the Gentiles.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
