Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Outline. What we should confess: Christ. § 1. The pure doctrine. § 2. We should confess ourselves to Christians and to all who confess the pure doctrine. § 3. Who should confess? § 4. What should move us to this. § 5. The purpose of confession. § 6. Examples. § 7. How the confession should be. § 8. Confession by deed. § 9. How things stand with confession among us. § 10. What we harvest from it. § 11. How we should conduct ourselves when we suffer for the sake of our confession. § 12. 1. We Christians should confess our faith in Christ before the world. Every Christian should be a preacher of the Gospel. And specifically we should a. testify to the world: you must have a Savior, otherwise you are lost, b. confess that Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the world, and that his Word is the truth. This must be the main content of our confession. Note a. To confess Christ 1. means to use God's name rightly (2nd Commandment), 2. and is a part of the spiritual priesthood. Note b. The world, too, confesses its unbelief freely and everywhere. Objection 1. I have faith in my heart. I belong to the invisible church. — § 5 b. Objection 2. That only offends people. Objection 3. I have no skill, no gifts for it. — Were the shepherds at Bethlehem educated people? They spoke as well as they could. Objection 4. But I cannot neglect or give up my occupation. — That is not necessary either. The shepherds returned again to their sheep. Within their occupation they spread the Word. Objection 5. That is what pastors are for. — Note e. Mere confession, to be sure, does not make one a Christian. Matth. 15:8: with the lips. Ps. 50:16. 17: you take my covenant in your mouth. Tit. 1:16: they profess that they know God, but —. 2 Tim. 3:5: having the appearance of a godly life. Matth. 7:21: Not everyone. Note d. What we are to confess is against all reason. 2. We should confess the pure doctrine, our Lutheran faith, indeed every Biblical truth, wherever it is attacked — for example, that Balaam's donkey spoke. Note a. To confess our Lutheran doctrine is necessary especially also toward those of false belief. We should testify to them: you are in error and are in danger. — That is true love.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
