The alternative is for a congregation to be formed and to be received into membership in the Synod. If
this occurs, the congregation may then call a pastor. Until such occurs, the pastor serving the campus
ministry is under call by and responsible to the district.
134. Dismissal of a Pastor (Ag. 2011) : A pastor had asked the Commission to respond to the question,
According to the Constitution and Bylaws of the LCMS, what is the exact process by which a
congregation can rightfully depose its pastor?
In response, the Commission agreed to forward to the pastor an opinion which it previously had given to a
request from a Dispute Resolution Panel regarding the relationship between the autonomy of a congregation
and the call of a pastor. This was dealt with in Ag. 1980, Min. #78.
135. Identification of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod for Accounting Purposes (Ag. 1985) :
Secretary Walter Rosin did not take part in this portion of the meeting. All other members were present.
The minutes for this item were prepared by Walter Tesch, Secretary pro tem.
Mr. Tesch made the following motion: "That the letter addressed to the President of the Synod, dated July
5, 1995, does not represent the action taken by the Commission at its meeting of June 10, 1995, and is
withdrawn." After discussion of over one hour, the chairman called the question. Yes 1; No 3.
The chairman cited the previous history of the Commission in that decisions of the Commission have
always been unanimous, and therefore asked that the previous vote be made unanimous. Mr. Tesch declined
to change his vote.
Mr. Tesch made the following motion: "In view of the fact that the President of the Synod has appointed a
Blue Ribbon Committee to study the structure of the Synod, the Commission withdraws its opinion of
March 6 1995, as clarified and submits it to the Blue Ribbon Committee for its use and study. There was no
second and no discussion. The chairman called the question. Yes 1; No 3.
The Commission then adjourned for lunch.
