Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

4. A church or Christian burial is one in which the dead person is buried with Christian honors, with singing, prayer, and the preaching of the Word of God. Note a. Conducting the Christian burial of the dead belongs among the official duties of the pastor, to which the congregation has called him. What the pastor does, he does in the name of the congregation. Note b. A burial already counts as a church burial when the pastor takes part in it in his official capacity and, say, prays an Our Father publicly. Note c. We should gratefully acknowledge the blessing of a Christian burial, and not think: It makes no difference to me how I am buried. Note d. If, through special circumstances, a Christian does not obtain a Christian burial, this does no harm to his salvation. Note e. The superstition that a Christian burial somehow still helps toward salvation is to be rejected.

5. Christian burial a. redounds to the honor of God; b. is a service of love. 2 Sam. 2:5: such mercy; c. serves for the comfort of the family; d. is a confession of belonging: that the deceased was a Christian and our brother in the faith. Note a. This confession is also expressed in the church and at the graveside through singing, prayer, and the confession of our common faith. Note b. Burial is generally regarded as a confession. If a lodge, or the military, or a Catholic priest follows the dead, one can safely draw conclusions about the deceased from that. 6. To whom it is to be granted. A Christian burial is only for Christians. We therefore grant a church burial only to those whom, in charity, we consider to be Christians and brothers in the faith: a. members of the congregation who have fallen asleep in the faith; b. outsiders who did not belong to the congregation but who were pastorally cared for by us on their deathbed and gave clear signs of repentance and faith; c. baptized children of un-Christian parents, so long as they still stand in the grace of baptism; d. stillborn, unbaptized children of Christian parents, of whom we have the hope that God receives them in grace; e. the possessed, the insane, who were known as Christians before their illness; f. the impenitent, the excommunicated, if they repent even in the last hour. Note a. Where necessary to avoid scandal, this will of course have to be publicly attested as well. Note b. If the pastor himself was not a witness to the repentance, then the testimony of upright Christians to that effect must be available. Note c. Also in the following cases a pastor may not refuse a Christian burial: 1. when someone was under church discipline but the excommunication proceedings had not yet been carried to completion; 2. when a member of the congregation died in an un-Christian manner, but this is known to the pastor alone and there were no witnesses; 3. when it is doubtful whether someone laid hands on himself or not, whether a suicide was in his right mind or acted in madness — when there can still be doubt as to whether someone died as a non-Christian. The benefit of the doubt goes to the deceased.

...removed from office rather than bury an openly un-Christian person. Past. 309. Testimonies from Luther: Luth. 56, 181. 40, 180. 35, 36. Testimony from Apinus: Luth. 40, 180. b. It would be a lie to sing, "his soul lives forever in God," when it is in fact certain that it has gone to damnation. It would be hypocrisy to confess someone as a brother in the faith who did not wish to belong to us. Note a. "We cannot sing our hymns." Luther. Note b. Burying non-Christians as Christians is a profaning of the name of God. c. It would give great offense 1. to the Christians themselves, who would have to take offense at it; 2. to the world. The world would have to think: "Faith or unbelief makes no difference; one can live godlessly and still be pronounced blessed," or: "The clergy do everything for money." d. Denying non-Christians a Christian burial is a powerful testimony against sin and unbelief, and the best sermon. Note. Were we to act otherwise, our testimony would bear little fruit.

9. Objections. a. Burial is for the sake of the living, not for the sake of the dead. — Answer: everything is nevertheless done for the sake of the dead. When unbelievers fetch a pastor for their dead, they do not want to hear God's Word; they want to give their dead person church honors. b. The relatives of the deceased belong to the congregation, and comforting them is the pastor's office. — Answer: the pastor can carry out his office before or after the burial without also bestowing on the dead honors that are not due him. c. The pastor could at least give a funeral address. One need not refer to the deceased at all. — Answer: if one does not want to refer to the dead person at all, why hold a funeral service in the first place? d. It is a fine opportunity to tell people who otherwise do not come to church the truth: do not live as this man did. — Answer: this would hurt the relatives, and would embitter the others rather than win them over. e. The pastor should merely read from the Agenda at the graveside, merely pray an Our Father, merely walk along. — Answer: the Agenda contains no forms for unbelievers. One does not need a pastor to pray the Our Father. If a pastor can pray the Our Father at the grave of an ungodly person, then he could just as well hold the entire funeral service.
