Board of Control Concordia Seminary St. Louis, Mo. Ralph Bohlmann, Acting President 6-144 To Designate Graduate School, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, as Chief Center for Advanced Work in Theology WHEREAS, We live in an age that expects its professional personnel to develop an ever-increasing competence in their respective fields of study and activity; and WHEREAS, This very expectation confronts our church body with both the challenge and the opportunity to train resource persons of special competence in theology as a formal discipline, particularly in view of the fact that the Synod has been able to begin the process of recapturing the heritage that made The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod distinctive in terms of the seriousness with which it took the Biblical revelation and the confessional witness thereto: and WHEREAS, The need for such specially trained persons has become particularly acute for the years ahead as a time for deepening the understanding on the part of our clergy, our parochial school teachers, and our laity of the kind of solid theology which our church body has consistently stood for and within recent years has been willing to reassert even at the cost of much turmoil and deep anguish; and WHEREAS, Our Synod has its own institutions to train men for the preaching and teaching ministry and therefore has a very special need for men who have put themselves through the hard discipline of earning S. T. M. and Th. D. degrees with a view to teaching theology both faithfully and competently at these institutions; and WHEREAS, Our church body has as one of its distinguishing features that pastors and teachers are required to attend cer- tain conferences twice a year; and WHEREAS. Such required attendance creates a high de- mand for adequately trained personnel especially in the field of theology; and WHEREAS, Concordia Seminary, St.Louis, has behind it more than a quarter century of experience in the requirements and methodology of graduate work in theology, including the training of teachers toward an M.A.R. degree, which repre- sents such training in depth: therefore be it Resolved. That we petition The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, in convention assembled, that it designate the School for Graduate Studies at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, as the chief training center for such advanced and specialized work in the discipline of theology; and be it further Resolved. That we petition the Synod to continue to make available to Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, the resources in terms of both finances and personnel to make possible a gradu- ate program of a quality equal to and even superior to that of the best in the field; and be finally Resolved. That we petition the Synod for the financial and personnel resources to develop and mesh this program of graduate studies with the needs for trained teachers of theology in the schools, colleges, and seminaries of the church and with the needs for continuing education. The educational program of all other students preparing for full-time church careers comes under the direct supervision of the Board for Higher Education of the Synod: and WHEREAS, Our Synod, under the present system, has no supervision of the deaconess training program or its curriculum: and WHEREAS, This could be best achieved if the deaconess school were added to one of our 4-year synodical schools (preferably centrally located): and WHEREAS, The graduating deaconess should also be certi- fied by the Synod just as all others who are called to serve the Synod’s congregations; therefore be it Resolved, That the Synod, assembled in convention at Ana- heim, establish a deaconess training program under the super- vision of the Board for Higher Education of the Synod; and be it further Resolved, That the deaconess program be included in one of our synodical schools.
