Concordia Theological Seminary has served the Synod for 100 of the Synod’s 128 years. in Springfield, Ill. —a city prominently identified in American history not only as the capital of Hlinois but, perhaps more importantly, as the home of Abraham Lincoln, the great and martyred Civil War Presi- dent; and WHEREAS, The seminary, in this unique historic setting, has established its identity in the academic and theological com- munities of the United States, Canada, and the world, which identity could be lost through an ill-considered move at this time; and WHEREAS, During this century of service the seminary in its present setting has kept pace with the needs of the Synod in supplying scholarly and well-trained pastors who hold fast to the confessional basis on which the membership of the Synod has been united; has become a well-respected theological institution with a faculty of recognized ability and theological insight: and has provided the membership of the Synod with pastors who today are engaged in stemming the tide of liberal and permissive theology which would undermine and destroy the doctrinal basis on which the Synod was founded: and WHEREAS, No proven reasons have been advanced in sup- port of the proposed relocation of the seminary other than the availability of a newer campus (primarily designed for under- graduate students) which must be abandoned by reason of falling enrollment and questionable worth to the Synod’s educational program: and WHEREAS.
