A Statement presents no new doctrines or theology and is neither a new standard of orthodoxy nor a document “based on private writings, but on such books as have been composed. approved, and received in the name of the churches which pledge themselves to the one doctrine and religion”: and WHEREAS. The doctrinal content of A Statement is in full accord with the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions and contains nothing contrary to them: and WHEREAS. The Lutheran Church has in the past, when con- fronted with doctrinal controversy and crisis. accepted expres- sions of belief which are in agreement with Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions: and WHEREAS. The Synod declared «i Statement of Scriptural and Confessional Principles to be a “more formal and comprehen- sive statement of belief’ in the sense of Resolution 5-24 of the 1971 Milwaukee convention and further declared that A State- ment shall hold the status defined in said resolution: and WHEREAS, Much pressure is now being brought to bear on the Synod to rescind the adoption of A Statement: therefore be it Resolved. That the Synod formally resist all such efforts to rescind the adoption of A Statement: and be it further Resolved. That the Synod reaffirm its adoption of A State- ment: and be it further Resolved. That the Synod acknowledge that the cause of so much unrest, divisiveness, and dissension today is doctrinal disagreement, resulting in two opposing theologies, which arises from the fact that some who use the historical-critical method of interpreting the Bible have forsaken the historical Lutheran doctrines as taught in Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, and that said users of historical-criticism plead for the church to be broad enough to tolerate doctrinal differ- ences: and be it further Resolved. That the Synod reaffirm the binding nature of its doctrinal statements on all its members: and be it further Resolved. That the Synod request those individuals who will not submit to the binding nature of its doctrinal statements, including A Statement of Scriptural and Confessional Principles. to do the honorable thing and withdraw from the Synod so that we bring an end to the present controversy and dissension: and be it finally Resolved. That the Synod require its officials. on both the synodical and the District level. to take disciplinary action in accord with the Constitution and Bylaws against all such as will not conform to synodical rulings. A Statement. which was published by Dr. J. A. O. Preus in consultation with the synodical Vice-Presidents. has been a tool to identify the theological and doctrinal issues which our Synod needs to consider and resolve: and WHEREAS. We believe, after a study of this document, that it sets forth the theological and doctrinal position of our Synod in accordance with the Word of God and the Lutheran Confessions: and WHEREAS. A Statement clearly and boldly asserts not only what we confess as truth in accordance with the Word of God and the Lutheran Confessions but also clearly identifies erro- neous opinions and options currently expressed by some in our Synod: therefore be it Resolved. That for the sake of unity and peace, each called or appointed servant in our Synod and each congregation make an immediate and thorough study of A Statement: and be it further Resolved. That each called or appointed servant in our Synod and each congregation then send to the synodical office by Sept. 1, 1975, their written personal commitment to the theolog- ical and doctrinal assertions of A Statement and its rejection of the opinions and options currently being taught as valid in our Synod: and be it further Resolved. That those who wish to reject this document with its clear assertions of truth and error also publicly announce their decision to the synodical office by Sept. 1, 1975: and be it further Resolved. That all those who reject this document A State- ment as a valid position of what is to be voluntarily taught in our Synod have excluded themselves from the fellowship of our Missouri Synod and have forfeited all rights and privileges as members of The Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod: and be it finally Resolved. That anyone wishing to be ordained, commis-. sioned, appointed, or to join our Synod be asked. after a thor- ough study of A Statement. to personally and voluntarily sub- scribe to it before God as a document that clearly speaks for the truths and against the errors of our generation and thus walk with us in unity and peace before His final coming in judg- ment. Our congregation supports the historic doctrinal position of the Missouri Synod (which it feels is upheld in A Statement) and expects that its sister congregations do the same: therefore be it Resolved. That the Synod at its Anaheim convention reaffirm its conviction that A Statement is in agreement with Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions: and be it further Resolved. That members of the Synod be expected to teach in accord with A Statement because of its agreement with Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions and also because of its clear presentation of doctrines and issues in controversy in the church today.
