TEV Good News for Modern Man—The New Testament in Today's English Version. New York: American Bible Society, Third Edition, 1971. NoTE: In distinction from a translation, a paraphrase is normally considered to be a consistently more free and inter- pretive rendering, designed to make the text more appealing and perhaps more easily understood by a wider spectrum of readers. The shortcomings of a paraphrase are evident in this comparative study. Sometimes a lack of faithfulness to the exact meaning of the Greek and Hebrew original may obscure or even change the meaning of the text. The translations of each proof passage were collated and compared with one another and with the original Hebrew or Greek reading. The following questions were asked of each passage in each translation and paraphrase: Is the rendering of this passage faithful to the original? Does the rendering of this passage serve the purpose for which this Passage is here used? Every passage as translated or paraphrased was eval- uated as follows: * If it was found acceptable, it was given no notation. * If judged usable but in need of more accurately reflecting the original, it was marked with the numeral one (1). * If it was judged as being not usable, it was marked with the numeral (2). It is hoped that Bible study groups in the Synod will make use of the following samples of this study to check out trans- lations and paraphrases for themselves. I.
