A Sign of the Last Times

Oberammergau

For some time now, numerous newspapers — and not least the film industry as well — have been pointing to an event now being prepared in the south of our country: the Passion Play of Oberammergau. These plays — in which the suffering and death of our Savior are portrayed in keeping with the biblical tradition — are to be performed again for the first time next year, after a sixteen-year pause. The individual performers were, as is generally reported, recently chosen by the elders of the village following a pontifical mass. Impressive pictures of those chosen, especially of the "Christ" and the "Mary," appeared in numerous illustrated magazines. — These facts prompt me to raise a few questions. How is one to regard them inwardly at all? Should one approve of the planned performances because an attempt is being made here to set before the world of today the suffering and death of Christ as vividly as possible? Or must one reject them because, at bottom, this only creates a sensation in the usual sense, one that lures a stream of visitors and newspaper reporters? *
