As we look to the future the Advance Editorial Com- mission hopes to expand its services to the lay leaders of the Synod’s congregations. In cooperation with the program boards of the Synod we will try to incorporate into the pages of Advance the kind of theological insight and program in- formation that will creatively build on our past to make current ministries more effective and new ministries more necessary as well as more integral to the life of the con- cerned modern Christian. “ADVANCE” EDITORIAL COMMISSION A. Lorenz Grumm, Chairman Victor A. Constien, Operations Director 10-08 Report of Committee on Publishing Walther’s Writings The Committee on Publishing Walther’s Writings was established by synodical convention action in Cleveland, Ohio, 1962. The resolution establishing the committee stated: Wuereas, God gave to The Lutheran Church —- Missouri Synod an outstanding theologian in the person of Dr. C. F. W. Walther: and Wuerras. The writings of Dr. Cc. F. W. Walther are scattered in various journals. serials, tracts. books. and even unpublished manuscripts. many of which have not been translated into En- glish: and Wuereas. Many of Dr. Walther’s writings are relatively in- accessible; and Wuereas. The works of theological leaders are generally printed in collected editions. and Werras, There is a growing appreciation of the importance of Dr. Walther’s writings among both Lutherans and non-Lu- therans: therefore be it Resolved, That the 1962 convention of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod authorize the Board of Governors of Concor- dia Historical Institute to be responsible for the publication of Dr. Walther's works: and be it further Resolved, That this convention instruct Concordia Publishing House to print the volume(s) of this work. properly approve’ by the Board of Governors of Concordia Historical Institute and the Commission on Church Literature. and be it finally Resolved, That the Fiscal Conference make available ade- quate funds for the cost of this project. The committee. over the course of years. has been en- deavoring to obtain the necessary funds to publish the writ- ings of Dr. C. F. W. Walther (1811—1887). first president and theological mentor of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod. The committee has experienced extreme frustration during the period of its existence because the necessary funds to produce the five volumes of Walther’s writings have not become available. Various sources of funds such as the synodical treasury. Concordia Publishing House. and the Aid Association for Lutherans have been approached, Au- thors have been assigned to specific volumes. Two members of the committee have been called to their eternal home during the past biennium. namely Dr. Erich H. Heintzen on 27 September 1971 and Dr. Carl S. Meyer on 17 December 1972. The Commission on Church Literature ap- pointed Dr. Wilbert Rosin to replace Dr. Heintzen and the Board of Governors of Concordia Historical Institute ap- pointed Mr. Gerhardt Kramer to replace Dr. Meyer. The committee has rendered two contributions to the Synod during the past: (1) all of Walther’s writings. both long and short. have been assembled and indexed. This ac- cumulation contains over 3.000 books, pamphlets. and articles in periodicals. This is the first time that all of these literary productions have been collected and cataloged. (2) Through the generous support of the Aid Association for Lutherans, all correspondence of Dr. Walther. originally written in German Gothic script. has been transcribed via typewriter. These transcriptions include 572 letters from the pen of Walther and 515 addressed to Walther. 132 “opinions” and other miscellaneous manuscripts. The Milwaukee convention in 1971 resolved (10-08) Pro- ceedings, p. 203: That the Synod receive the report of the Committee on Pub- lishing Dr. C. FW. Walther’s Writings. express its gratitude that progress is being made on this project. and encourage the com- mittee. with the assistance from Concordia Publishing House and the Synod's Board of Directors, to work toward its completion. It should be noted that the synodical Board of Directors, during the year, has allocated $5,000 to publish the transla- tion of Kirche und Amt. The committee hopes that this volume will be coming off the press sometime next year. Finally, the committee expresses _ its gratitude to the Board of Governors of the Concordia Historical Institute for the opportunity to have served the Synod in this capacity. Larry Scheer, Secretary 10-10A To Publish Dr. Beck’s Old Testament Translation Wuereas. The New Testament in the Language of Today has proved to be a worthy addition to the growing collec- tion of modern translations: and Wueneas.
