St, Paut’s LUTHERAN CHURCH Fairmont, Minn. Duane Roloff, Chairman Herbert Haertel, Secretary 2-73 To Reaffirm Affirmations Rather Than “A Statement,” Article II Wuereas, A group of our members has been studying A Statement of Scriptural and Confessional Principles, spe- cifically Article III on the “Mission of the Church,” includ- ing the references and citations in the “Study Edition”; and Wuereas, They have also surveyed the ministry of Jesus to the whole man and studied His instructions to the disciples in Luke 9:1-2; 10:8-9; and John 20:21 and noted that we are to carry on Christ’s ministry to the whole man; and Wuereas, The results of their Bible study was confirmed when they studied in greater scope than as cited in the “Study Edition” the “Affirmations on God’s Mission” adopted by Synod at Detroit in 1965 and the “Social Ministry Affir- mations” adopted by Synod at Milwaukee in 1971; and Wuereas, They have found that Article II] of A State- ment does not fully express the mission of the church as does the Bible and the aforementioned Affirmations; there- fore, upon their recommendation, be it Resolved, That Ascension Congregation petition the syn- odical convention to be held in New Orleans in 1973 to re- affirm both the Detroit “Affirmations on God’s Mission” and the Milwaukee “Social Ministry Affirmations.” ASCENSION LUTHERAN CHURCH East Lansing, Mich. Carroll Wamhoff, Chairman 2-74 To Carry Out Mission Affirmations Wuereas, The Mission Affirmations were formulated after much research and are solidly grounded in the Gospel of Jesus as it is revealed in the Scriptures: and WHEREAS, They express confidence and joy in the Lord of the church, and accent the oneness of God’s mission everywhere in the world: and Wuereas, The 1965 convention joyfully endorsed them; therefore be it Resolved, That the LCMS in convention praise God for renewing our zeal for His work through the Mission Affir- mations; and be it further Resolved, That the Synod continue to carry out these affirmations through its missions and its Districts. Z10N LUTHERAN CHURCH Decatur, Ind. Morris Krueckeberg, President Raymond Thieme, Secretary 2-T5A To Reaffirm Mission Affirmations Wuereas, The Mission Affirmations of the 1965 synodical convention provide a positive direction in the area of mis- sions at home and abroad by serving as a guide for a true and total ministry in Christ, of Christ, and with Christ; and WuereaS. These affirmations are to lead the individual persons, each congregation, all the Districts, and the Synod to have a true concern for all mankind, those without and within fellowship, and their whole existence in relation to the Gospel; and Wuereas, We the members of the LCMS have often strayed from the positive direction and guide of these af- firmations; therefore be it Resolved. That we humbly repent of ovr failu.s to carry out the affirmations, secure in the forgiveness of our Lord, who also enables us to follow in His steps and to carry out the mission of the church: and be it further Resolved. That we as a Synod reaffirm the Mission Affir- mations, establish their intent as our daily ambition, and get on with the task of sharing God's love with the whole world. They have helped the people of God to under- stand the implications of the Gospel for their life under Christ both corporately and individually; and Whereas. Their validity has been recognized by the Synod through their extension in the form of affirmations on evangelism and social ministry adopted by the Synod in 1971; and Wuereas, They continue to hold the potential of further valuable counsel for the work of our church in our time: therefore be it Resolved, That the Synod urge its member congregations to restudy and apply the affirmations in the context of their local circumstances: and be it finally Resolved, That the various boards and commissions of the Synod be urged to let the Mission Affirmations guide them as they implement their several responsibilities to the church. FacuLty Concorpia TEACHERS COLLEGE River Forest, Ill. 2-77 To Draft New Social Affirmations Wuereas. The LCMS at its 1971 convention in Milwaukee hastily adopted a set of Social Ministry Affirmations (Res. 9-07) without providing pastors or congregations previous opportunity to study them: and WuereasS, Sections of these affirmations are both confus- ing and appear to be in direct conflict with Articles XVI and XXVIII of the Augsburg Confession: and Wuereas. These affirmations are both verbose and contain strong political implications which according to Article XXVIII are outside the domain of the church (see especially section V1): therefore be it Resolved, That the CTCR draw up a new statement de- fining the social ministry of the church for action by the convention of 1975; and be it finally Resolved.
