Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. 1923. 17 Through timely action.of Mr. Brauer approaches to the Seminary tract from the north and south were secured. A topographical survey was made showing 5 feet. contour lines, - also showing exact location of trees. ; The main group being a connecting series of buildings arranged - ground courts, the Committee went to great pains, through repeated. inspection of college groups built along these lines, in order to assure itself that there would be sufficient light and air.’ The smallest of - our courts measures 90’X110’, while the new Harkness Dormitories "at Yale have courts 50’X60’ and smaller. The faculty and Building Committee established a standard of two students per room. The architect suggested a room-scheme which makes all studies serve at the same time as bedrooms, two students studyitig and sleeping in each room. This would represent a saving of 276 lineal feet of dormitory buildings over against the scheme suggested by the Committee. However, the Committee believed that our people generally would not approve of students living and sleep- ing in the same room and hence adopted a general scheme calling for suites of two rooms, one study- and one bedroom, to be occupied by two students. From its experience of many years the faculty stands convinced that at a graduate school like Concordia Seminary no more than two students should, as a rule, room together. . This, in spite of the higher cost of building thereby entailed. In regard to bills it was resolved that the secretary and chairman or a member delegated by the chairman sign the vouchers, and that the financial secretary of the Building Committee, Mr. A. W. Thias, '. attach original bills to’ vouchers for this purpose and report to the _ Committee at each session the amounts of bills paid and payable. VI. Resolution Calling for Preliminary Plans in Order that Cost of Building Might be Established. ; On September 8 the following resolutions were adopted and communicated to the architect:— ~ “Resolved, That it is the wish of the Committee to inform itself ‘at this time of the approximate cost of necessary first group of buildings as projected.” The firm was requested to make sufficient drawings in sketch form and to provide - preliminary specifications and other preliminary information regarding one unit ef a dormitory. VIL Committee on Quarry Appointed. At this time the attention of the Committee was:drawn to certain stone quarries in Arkansas. A subcommittee, consisting of Mr. H. . W. Horst and Mr. Wn. F. Wischmeyer, was appointed to look into the é Possibilities of this stone.
